His birthdate is obviously not set in stone. I came up with the date based on him being about 11 years older than his wife, Mary Gayman, in the 1870 census in Big Rock, Illinois. She was born in 1841, so that makes him being born about 1832. The 1880 census says the same thing. One source, although I question the reliablity, says he came over when he was 14. Immigration would be about 1846. My grandmother would say that John and the O'Kieffe's came from County Cork. Thanks for your reply. I will keep a record just in case!
