Hi - I'm new to this list and am trying to trace my grand father Henry O'Keefe's Australian origins, and his parents James O'Keefe & C/Katherine O'Keefe (nee Hussey) who lived in Australia.
The details I know from my father are that Henry James O'Keefe was born in the Ovens Valley farming district in Victoria, Australia, near or in the town of Beechworth on 3 March in about 1873 (I think). Henry's parents were James O'Keefe and C/Katherine Hussey or Hussy. As Henry is said to have grown up with horses on a farm in the Ovens Valley farming district, I suppose that James was a farm labourer or similar occupation.
Henry came to Kumara on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand in circa 1889 for the gold rush on his own. He didn't make his fortune but ended up driving four 'n hand stage coaches as he knew how to handle horses.
On 11 Nov 1897 Henry O'Keefe married Annie Tobin whose parents John Tobin and Elizabeth Woods farmed near Geraldine in New Zealand. Henry and Annie O'Keefe had four children: Marion b. 1898, Dorothy (Dot) b. 1905, William b. 1899 and Albert (Bert) b. 1909. The family lived in Westport in the South Island of New Zealand, and later in Wellington, NZ. Henry died on 14 Oct 1930 in Wellington.
I'd love to hear from anyone with any information or clues on these people.
