obits in the early 20s....

does anyone know if obits were published in the early 1920s in Clarmore? I am looking for the obit of John Lafayette Chaffin/Chafin who died around 1923. Unfortunately, no one really knows the date. He is buried in Woodlawn but is, for some unknown reason, not on the 'residents' list. I have a picture of his gravestone and my Dad has seen it several times. In his place in there paperwork is another Chafin, who was his grandson. BUT I DIGRESS: did they publish obits back then, and how would I go about getting one?
