There is no indication in the 1.5 to 2 inches of original documents in the pension file of Lodowick (and Anna) Underhill which includes his certificate file 316944, invalid appt. 436798 and widow application 669209 held at the National Archives, Washington DC, that they were ever in Payne County.
Some dates/places extracted from those original records are:
Sept. 28, 1851Bureau Co., Illinois
Dec. 4, 1861, Tennessee, Illinois
Oct. 8, 1881, McDonough Co., Illinois
April 23, 1888, Lodowick, age 70 years, Tennessee, McDonough Co., Illinois
Aug. 3, 1891, L. Underhill, age 73, resident Tampico, Bureau Co., Illinois (Declaration to Increase Invalid Pension submitted several times over the years.)
Feb. 14, 1893, P.O. Box Anabel, Macon Co., Missouri
Nov. 15, 1898, Ann lived in Geary, Blaine Co., Oklahoma
There was no evidence anyone had ever searched through most of the original documents, especially the alphabetical (A to Z) depositions from fellow comrades serving along side Lodowick in battles to prove his invalid pension within Lodowick's pension file as many of the documents had not been separated after the loss of binding strings.
At the very top of the file, the U.S. Pension Agency at Chicago, Illinois, on Dec. 27, 1897 dropped Lodowick Underhill due to his death, Dec. 3, 1897.When he requested a pension on Oct. 8, 1881, he submitted from McDonough Co., IL.
At the top of the file was the Widow's Pension by Ann Underhill filed by an attorney on Jan. 7, 1898 at Canadian Co., Oklahoma, although Ann was a resident of Geary, Blaine Co., Oklahoma Territory. From her Widow's Pension file, there were several affidavits to testify to her marriage to Underhill and to determine her eligibility in reference to her Aber marriage (ascertaining if she married Underhill after the Aber death). From her Widow's Pension file, Lodowick Underhill enrolled at Tennessee, Illinois, Dec. 4, 1861, as a private in Co. "A", 64th Regt. Ills. Inft.He was honorably discharged on Sept. 20, 1862.He married Ann Aber at Bureau Co., Illinois on Sept. 28, 1851 by Rev. Moore."Twice previously married first to ____ Jones and next to Aber. That the soldier had been previously married to Cynthis Goodwell.""...died December 3, 1897 at Waldon, I.T."It was determined there were no children under 16 years of age. There had been quite a few pages questioning the death of Aber who went west in about 1846 and never returned."A man named Henry Magee, now dead, was with Aber at the time of his death. That soldier was married previously to Cynthis Goodwell, who died in about the year 1847."A marriage certificate from Whiteside Co., Illinois from Geo. W. Howe, Clerk of County Court, certified Lodwick Underhill married Miss Anne Aber on Sept. 18, 1851 by J.W.D. Moore/Minister, signed in Morrison on Oct. 1, 1898.
On a General Affidavit from J.W. Aber, age 49, of Canadian Co., OK, J.W. Aber stated Lodowick died at the home of his son at Waldon, Pontotock Co., I.T. on Dec. 3, 1897.J.W. Aber stated he attended the funeral and procured his coffin and burial outfit.J.W. Aber stated there was no public record of death exists.Had no attending physician. No undertaker officiated."That he was buried by his neighbors and friends.""That the soldier was in good health on his usual health up to the moment of his death.""That he came in from his work to the house and dropped dead."
On a General Affidavit from Albert Gray, age 44, Waldon, Pontotock Co., I.T."died on December the 3rd 1897 of supposed heart disease at the residence of L.H. Aber. ...sit-up with him the night he lay a corpse and helped to bury him."
On a General Affidavit from Wm. Lane, age 40, Geary, Blaine Co., Oklahoma, "...left no property or assets of any..."."...married to Patterson Aber early in the fourties. That the said Patterson Aber dead of cholera in the gold fields of California in 1849..."
On a General Affidavit from L.H. Aber, age 28, Geary, Blaine Co., Oklahoma, died at his house near Waldon in the Chickasaw Nation, I.T.
died Waldon, I.T. Dec. 3, 1897.
Waldon appears on the Indian Nation map in present-day Grady County, Oklahoma, near the town of Tuttle, due west of Norman and southeast of Minco and northeast of Chickasha.
