Killed & Injured in Mines March 5-1909, Five Ground to Death, Huge Rock Falls On Workman and Kills Them, Joplin Mo., Five Men were instantly killed and two others were fatally injured in one of the most disastrous mine accidents in the history of the district when a slab of rock weighting 30 tons in a drift fell at the West Seventh Street Mining company. The Dead: Harry Ritter JOE MORRISON Gilbert Ritter Bob Warren A.C. Griffith Fallally injured:Bud Ritter and Frank Owsley.The seven menwere at work timbering the roof. which had been pronouned unsafe, when the slab fell, grinding the victims beneath tons of dirt. Gilbert Ritter, Harry Ritter and Bud Ritter are brothers, Bud being in charge of the work, when the slab fell. Three of the bodies are still under the dirt and can not be recovered for some time.
