Oklahoman, The (Oklahoma City, OK) - August 31, 2006
Deceased Name: Virginia Ruth Suggs

SUGGS

Virginia Ruth Suggs, known as "Ruthie" to her grandsons, great-grandsons, and many other friends, passed away at home on August 28, 2006. She was 83 years old. Her childhood was spent in Hartshorne, Oklahoma, where she was born on February 11, 1923, to Josie and Logan Claycomb. Moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma in the ninth grade, she graduated from Tulsa Webster High School. After marrying James M. "Pete" McKenzie, she remained in Tulsa, while Pete was away in the military service. Upon his return, he took a position with Knapp Outdoor Advertising in Ponca City, Oklahoma. They remained in Ponca City, raising their two children, Terry Mitchell McKenzie and Marion Lynn McKenzie. Her husband of twenty years, Pete preceded her in death in 1983. Virginia is survived by her daughter, Marion McKenzie Thompson, and her husband, Richard, of Oklahoma City; her son, Colonel Terry Mitchell McKenzie, USAF (Ret.), and Ms. Lynda Lockwood of Edmond; and cousins, Jim Vallion and Maggie Barrett, who are the only remaining members of her extended family. Dr. L. D. "Doc" Suggs, to whom Virginia was married in 1969 and who was the love of her life, preceded her in death in 1993. She was blessed with four grandsons, Matt and Charles Thompson, of Oklahoma City, Sean McKenzie of Chicago, Illinois, and Brandon McKenzie of Denver, Colorado; four great grandsons, Nick and Thayer Thompson of Oklahoma City, and Conner and William McKenzie of Chicago, and one great-granddaughter, Madeline McKenzie of Chicago. Virginia was indeed a lucky woman to have Richard as her son-in-law. Richard afforded Virginia great respect, enjoyed her company and was tireless in providing her many comforts during her life. May God bless him. A steadfast friend, and one Virginia could always count on; Mr. Don Fiolle brightened her days with his thoughtfulness and compassion. Ms. Sharen Cobble was her friend and faithful caregiver, with her until the time of her death. Ms. Carly Jackson was a comfort to Virginia with her sweet spirit and caring ways. The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude for the care provided by Frontier Hospice, and especially Virginia's nurses, Rosa, B.J., and nurse's aide JoEllen. The family would also like to thank Dr. Stacy Foshee for exceptional medical treatment of Virginia. Virginia defined herself simply as the "Herb and Bird Lady." Her passions in life included tending to her many gardens and bird-watching. Virginia also enjoyed interior decorating, having worked at Prestige Interiors in Oklahoma City for many years. However, knowing how to be a friend was Virginia's dearest attribute. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends. Funeral services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 N. Shartel, Oklahoma City, OK on Friday, September 1, 2006 at 11:00 a.m., with interment following at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, Virginia desired that memorials be made to Westminster School, Attn: Mrs. Susan Frank, 600 NW 44th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73118.
