Waurika News-Democrat Waurika, Jefferson Co., Oklahoma Friday, April 17, 1936 NORWOOD CURRY, district cotton classer for this section of the state, is one of those fellows who believe in standing in good with his boss. Monday night, CURRY, HENRY and IVAN JOHNSTON, CHARLES CLUTZ and LEWIS SIMS went frog hunting with the result that 24 big ‘uns were caught. Curry put a mess on cold storage which was sent to P.E. HARRILL at Oklahoma City, general manager of the Oklahoma Cotton Growers Association. Mrs. J. E. HAVRON of Addington, accompanied by Mrs. VIRDO SALMAN, called at the News-Democrat office to have her paper moved ahead another year. She is 84 years old and a regular reader of the paper. She is enjoying good health and is about to be out and around quite a bit. Her husband reached his 90th last October 7, but is a little feeble and stays close to home. Mrs. C. B. CARTER Mrs. C. B. CARTER, 54 years old, died at the family home on Meridian St. Thursday April 18 of flu and complications. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the Baptist Church. “They Didn’t Want Law Enforcement, So I Quit” Following a flare-up at the city council meeting, M. C. GROSECLOSE, mayor, and T. B. WATTS, police judge, resigned. Ringer Quits Job after 36 Years ED RINGER, “grand old man of the road,” who has been “making” Waurika since 1902, was here again but no longer with the trunks of merchandise, but as a goodwill builder for the firm he has represented for 36 years, RICE Sons here since 1902. (long article about his days as a traveling salesman). Ringer remembers one big mistake he made. The family had located in Arkansas, moving from Georgia, and one day in his father’s store, an Indian stole a stirrup. Ringer, being light weight and young, was told to get on a pony and overtake the Indian. ..He overtook the Indian and got the stirrup all right, then saw a swell halter the Indian had to, so he demanded that. The Indian yelled and lunged at Ringer… then the prettiest horse race back to town you ever saw, only I was in the lead then. … Ringer has lived in Chickasha for the past 30 years and he and Mrs. Ringer will continue to make their home at 1326 S 20th. Boys Hurt Friday evening, a Ford coupe driven by ROY COTHAM, 15, with BUSTER SMART, JACK BILBRY, and KAY WEEKS as passengers, turned over the crossing on North Main. Roy got his arm broken three places and Buster with two broken places on his left arm. Mrs. NORA JANE PETERS, director of the social welfare for the county, took 10 boys to enroll in the CCC camp, completing the county quota. Mrs. HATTIE BELL FEWELL accompanied her to Duncan. Concrete Road Work The last hopper of concrete was poured by Ryan & Richards on the Waurika end of the highway, making Jefferson County with an all weather road north and south. Another Family Leaves for West Mr. and Mrs. A. L. RIDER of Madden Grove will have a sale for all stock, feed, and household goods on April 21. They will leave for a new home in Arizona, needed by Mr. Rider’s problem with tuberculosis. They have lived in the community a long time. She is the former Miss MARTHA FLOYD, having lived there for 24 years, 18 with her husband on the old W. B. RIDER farm. Town Topics GEORGE ANTRIM left to visit relatives in Missouri and Illinois. Mrs. AGNES SMITH of El Reno was a guest of Mr. J. A BINER and was accompanied home by Mrs. C. MCLEAKE who will visit her sister-in-law, Mrs. SALLIE NEWSOME. J. B SHARP is ill and has a big carbuncle on the back of his neck which is showing 20 head. Mrs. W. T. F. BUSH and Mrs. THOMAS went to Norman to visit Mrs. Bush’s nephew JACK MASON who is enrolled at O.U. Mrs. C. R. PHELAN, who and operation at Oklahoma City two weeks, is recovering. Mrs. B. D. CHESSER of Bowie visited her sister Mrs. E. R. CAGLE and family. Miss DOROTHY SURFACE assisted CAROLS MONTANDON with music at the Hastings school. Y.C. HOOPER of the Hooper community west of town returned from Oklahoma City where he visited his sons O.K, and MONROE his son LEE at Cushing. Miss JENNIE BEAVERS, who has been at Wichita Falls, is now employed by the Jefferson County Abstract office in Waurika. She and her sister Miss RUBYE BEAVERS share an apartment at the ETTER home. E. J. OSTERHUAS drove to Chickasha to meet his daughter Mrs. JOHN PIERCE and her small daughter BARBARA ANN who will visit here. Miss ANN KOPELLER will also visit her sister Mrs. Osterhaus. Mr. and Mrs. GUY STEWARD of Duncan were guests of their brother, L. G. MORGAN and family, and Mrs. Steward’s parents Mr. and Mrs. J. P. MORGAN. Mrs. PAUL KETCHEN went to Oklahoma City to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. DAVIDSON, her brother HASKELL DAVIDSON and her sisters Mrs. HARDY WATSON and Mrs. L. A. ARMSTRONG and families, then returned home. Mrs. C. H. GAINES returned from visiting her daughter Mrs. A. M. KERLEY and Mr. Kerley at Wichita, Kansas. C. S STORMS, one of the editors of this paper, is on vacation. There is concern over the illness of Mrs. FANNIE COTNER, a pioneer resident of this town and one of the best loved women. She has been ill with flu. Her son HARRELL of Altus was here and another son PAUL COTNER and his wife of Houston, Texas arrived. PAUL SULLIVAN, Miss DOROTHY SURFACE and HASKELL SPIVEY were guests of Mr. and Mrs. FLOYD SULLIVAN at Lawton. Mrs. ROY SIMS and baby, DEWEY LEROY, Miss JEAN CASHURBN, Miss HELEN SAREOUS, Miss MARJORY ROGERS and Miss MADEAN SIMS, all of Graham, Texas, were guest of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. HENRY SIMS. Mrs. OLA TAYLOR, her daughter, Mrs. EDWARD KOENINGER of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Taylor’s sister Mrs. DAISY MORRIS of Geronimo and the latter’s niece, Mrs. PANSY RIGSBY of Lawton were at Paradise, Texas with Mrs. Koeninger’s in-law, and at Slidell with Mrs. W. T. CAMPBELL, mother of Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Morris. EARL MCGRAW and son GORDON and Miss FRANCES RENFROW of Ardmore and his father-in-law, WALTER BULLARD of Longview, Texas, were here. Mr. and Mrs. LAMBUTH HILLERY of this town, their mother Mrs. R. H. HILLERY of Ryan and Mr. and Mrs. H. H. CARSON of Wichita Falls attended the Easter Pageant at Medicine Park. Little miss CORINNA JANE was the guest of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. BEESON GRANTHAM of Duncan. The DUDE BOWLES’ Beauty Shop is having a strenuous time. Mrs. Bowles is recovering from an appendicitis operation and Miss DUADE COOK, assistant operator, is ill. Mrs. GWENDOLYN VANBEBBER is in charge with Mrs. GEORGE “TISHA” BENTLEY assisting. Miss WINNIE BELL SPARKS, attending college at Denton, Texas, came home for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. A. STITES of Dallas were here looking after their business interests. They were at Henryetta where he has farming interest. Death Sadness came to Mrs. W. R. SPARKS and family which includes her mother Mrs. CALVIN MARSHALL, and Mrs. Sparks’ daughter Miss WINNIE BELL, when her brother, Judge JOHN MARSHALL of Quanah, Texas died. John Marshall, oldest son of CALVIN and MARY CORNELIUS MARSHALL, was born in Shongalou, Louisiana, educated in Louisiana and Texas schools, completing the law course at Vanderbilt at Nashville, Tennessee. He moved to Quanah with his parents in 1890. He married Miss EMMA TOLBERT in 1901 at Quanah and they attended college together after their marriage. Four children were born to them: HUGH, MILDRED, NED and KATHERINE, who with the judge’s mother, Mrs. Calvin Marshall, two sisters, Mrs. Sparks of Waurika and Mrs. GUY HARRIS of Dallas, two brothers, JOE and GRAHAM MARSHALL of Quanah, and several nieces and nephews are the immediate family survivors. Funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon by a friend and former pastor. RICE LARENCE BULLARD RICE LARENCE BULLARD, youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. WALTER BULLARD of Longview, Texas, died after six weeks with a vein infection following flu. He passed away Friday night after being in a Longview hospital for several weeks. The body was brought to Waurika Saturday and taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. DRISKILL, old family friends, where it was left until Sunday afternoon when services were held at the Methodist Church here, by Rev. J. O. WHITWORTH. Interment was in the family lot in the Waurika cemetery beside a brother. Rice was born March 29, 1918 at Waurika. He left this town with his parents in 1921 but spent part of a school year here with a sister, Mrs. E. E. MCCRAW. He visited here frequently and he and GORDON MCGRAW were about the same age. Rice was a senior at Longview High School, converted at age 11 to the Methodist Church. A funeral service was held at Longview Friday evening. Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. WALTER BULLARD, a brother ERNEST WEBB of Longview, two sisters, Mrs. ELGE MOORE of Ada and Mrs. E. E. MCCGRAW of Ardmore, and several aunts, uncles, and aunts. Pallbearers at Waurika were his cousins, GLEN, ED and JIM BULLARD of Duncan, AB AND JOHN LAWSON of Healdton. L. P. MASON L. P. MASON passed away at the Waurika hospital Friday night after an illness of some duration. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Chapel and were conducted by Elder HARY E. BAUGH of the Church of Christ. Interment was in the Waurika cemetery. L. P. MASON was born April 13, 1870. He is survived by Mrs. Mason and several children and grandchildren and other relatives. He was an early day settler in Waurika and will be remembered and missed especially by old timers. For many years he dug most of the wells in the city and community. For the past several years, he and his family had their home in the Chapel Hill rural community. Where Is Grandma? A play will be presented at Irving Consolidated School Friday night, April 24. CAMBPELL visited at Walters. Death RALPH BROWN, 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. BERT BROWN, died Wednesday after a brief illness. He died at a Duncan hospital. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Saturday by Rev. PRESTIDGE. Interment was in the Addington cemetery. Wedding A romance begun in high school culminated Sunday morning in the marriage of Miss MARY JO MITCHELL and ALFRED WILLIAMSON. The vows were read by Rev. RALPH A. HILL of the Waurika Baptist Church in the presence of HUGH CALLOWAY, JIMMIE ANDERSON, HELEN SCOTT and LOUISE HUFFER. They are both graduates of Addington High School and she attended business college at Oklahoma City. They will make their home in the H. K. PRICE apartment.
