In May, 2006, a tall white marble stone was placed at the grave of Richard S. McHaffie born 1832 Indiana died November 1897 who served in 98th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. The stone was placed by an organization. I had submitted my great-grandfather's Civil War record and pension information a few years ago, and deeply appreciate the placement of the stone and the photos that were taken of it and sent to me by a lady who lives in the Ketchum, OK, area. Great-grandfather told his sons and daughters of his banished McHaffie ancestor from Scotland. I have researched and charted various families including Howard of SC AL ARK OK Cullen OK and MS, McCarty and Ball of VA, Crawford of KY, McEachin of MS OK Tilley, Campbell of VA and Ramsey of TN KY OK Shelton of TN TX Barron of TX Choate of TN VA Info is at genforum gencircles rootsweb McHaffie and McIlhaffie trace to southwestern Scotland and my banished ancestor, John, of family tradition, proved to be in many pages of the Register of the Privy Council of Scotland, at Wigtown, Scotland, October 1684, in Canongate Prison in Edinburgh in February 1685, banished for presbyterianism ("Covenanters") and for being at Battle of Bothwell Bridge, southeast of Glasgow, June 1679. The lead for all of this info was found in books published by Genealogical Publishing Co, Baltimore and authored by David Dobson of Scotland. Dobson has provided much info on thousands of emigrants from Scotland with sources. John McHaffie was able to hide until 1684 when he was captured. His house at Gargerie, in Kirkcowan parish, was ordered on 17 Oct 1684 to be pulled down and destroyed by the Sheriff's men, and this was done and those living there (on the Oct 1684 parish list) were turned out. Modern photos of the foundation and the wall beside the remains of the place were shared with me by a doctor who lives in the area of Wigtown. Other McHaffies lived in Kirkcudbright, also in Ayrshire.
