In Honor of Miss Young
Little Miss JACKQUE JACKSON entertained in honor of MISS IDA YOUNG, her teacher, at the hospitable home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. JACKSON Wednesday evening, May 1. The rooms were artistically decorated with wild flowers. Dancing was the special feature. Music was rendered by Mesdames KIDWELL and WOODWORTH. Cake and punch were served by the charming little hostess. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. W. W. WOODWORTH, Mr. and Mrs. CHARLES HARRIS, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. CLOUGHLEY, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. KIDWELL, Mesdames C. A. DULANEY, N. A. DULANEY, NORMA DOWNING, Misses IDA YOUNG, BERNICE DULANEY, BLANCHE DULANEY, CALLIE DAY, MAGGIE WILSON, ETHEL ALLRED, HELEN DENNIS, BERTIE DULANEY, and FLORENCE CLOUGHLEY, Messrs. A. A MORRIS, A. H. FOLSOM, PETE MCCANN, HAMP HARWELL, and R. W. POLLARD.

J. W. TAYLOR of Dexter, Illinois is visiting his brother F. M. TAYLOR of this place.

For the first time in several months, a meeting of the Commercial Club was held..

Accidentally Killed
GORDON WEST, better known as Doc, was accidentally killed as a result of dynamiting stumps on his farm near Healdton last Thursday. Having set a charge of dynamite under a stump, he was standing 75 yards away then the explosion occurred. The stump was blown to pieces and a piece of it struck in his abdomen, from the effects he died some 24 hours later. Gordon was the son of Mr. and Mrs. DAVID WEST, who are well known in this part of the country, was married and had two children. The body was buried at Healdton Saturday afternoon. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Jail Break at Waurika
News was received here over the telephone last Tuesday morning of a jail break at Waurika and all prisoners escaped. All but one was recaptured. JOHN C. TAYLAR is still at large.

Killing at Doyle
R. J. CREEL, returning from Doyle, reports that DR. BOB WILSON was shot by Mr. STEWART there Monday night. Stewart is a school teacher. The victim was a brother to DR. W. A WILSON, who resided here several years before locating at Fox.

Mr. and Mrs. HOLMAN Entertain
Mr. and Mrs. SHURLEY HOLMAN entertained at their beautiful country home five miles northeast of Cornish Tuesday evening, April 30. The evening was most enjoyably spent with music and dancing. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. EARL CORNISH, Mrs. SESSIONS, Misses COLEMAN, MOSES, MALLIE JOHNSON, BLANCHE DULANEY, IDA YOUNG, HELEN DENNIS and Messrs. A. A. MORRIS, A. H. FOLSOM, HAMP HARWELL, ODUS FOLSOM, and JOHN MUNDELL.

MISS IDA YOUNG, who had charge of the primary grades in the Cornish school, departed for her home near Hastings.

Gets Thirty and Fifty
J. L. LEWIS, a farmer residing west of town, was convicted in the Justice court on petty larceny. JOHN TRIMBLE missed a pair of heavy hand made leather lines from his harness shed. After discovering that Lewis has such a pair that looked very much like the missing lines, a search warrant was granted and the lines were taken by the deputy sheriff. He was given thirty days in jail and a fine of $50. The jail sentence was suspended during good behavior, in the Carter County case, but nothing like doing in Jefferson.

Atlee News Items
Mr. and Mrs. TOBE WRIGHT left for Cooper, Texas to make their home. MRS. TOM WRIGHT spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. TOM GOLDSMITH. Mr. and Mrs. M. S. STIDHAM were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. ZACK STIDHAM Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. JOHN DANIEL were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. DANIEL. Mr. and Mrs. BEN TULIA were the guests of friends in the Plainview community Sunday. LEE and WADE DANIEL attended the ball game at Cornish. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. WILSON were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. ZACK STIDHAM.

In Memory
Whereas on the 29th day of February, 1912, Brother CLARK SMITH was called from the walks of men to his last reward and by his death, Cornish Lodge No. 68, A.F.&A.M., lost a worthy member… having been made a Mason during the Civil War, under dispension from Grand Lodge of Mississippi, to open lodge and receive candidates in the Army. His membership was in the Sparter Lodge No. 222, Sparter, Miss., then moved to Cornish in 1901 and demitted to the Cornish lodge… committee of G. W. THOMPSON, J. L. MCKASSON, and D. F. SPRADLING.

Appointed trustee of the bankrupt stocks of the City Drug Store, A. L. WAURIKA of Waurika was making inventory of the two stocks, with A. L. DUNKIN assisting.

H. H. LINDSEY of Claypool, candidate for sheriff, passed through Cornish last Saturday en route to Healdton where he was called to hold funeral services of GORDON WEST.

VINCE REYNOLDS visited friends at Tishomingo.

N. E. BROOKS went to Ardmore on business.

Col. Hardy Watson
COL. HARDY WATSON is a candidate for county assessor. He is a native of Tennessee, moving to Texas in 1890, then coming here.

CHARLES LONDON of Waurika is a Democratic candidate for county attorney. He came from Montague County, Texas to Oklahoma, lived at Hastings for awhile then moved to Waurika. He has practiced law for a number of years.

Captain J. M. ADAMS of Ryan is a Democratic candidate for county judge. He has lived here for 17 years, actively practiced law since the federal courts were established in Indian Territory after practicing law for several years in Texas.

E. C. “ED” RICH of near Oscar is a Democratic candidate for sheriff. He has been working as deputy sheriff since statehood, raised in Texas and has been in this area for several years.

PROF. R. C. WHITE of Waurika is a Democratic candidate for county superintendent of school. He has been a teacher in the Waurika schools for a number of years.

J. F. WILLIAMS of near Claypool was in town and reported that all his cotton was planted.

BIRT SIMPSON of the firm of TYLER & SIMPSON of Ardmore was here on business.

DR. WILSON Not Dead
The report last week that Dr. BOB WILSON of Doyle had been killed is a mistake. He is still living with a good chance to recover. He was shot just behind the ear, a dangerous wound. DR. W. A .WILSON of Fox was here visiting his family and reported that he hoped for his brother’s recovery.

E. F. REYNOLDS, who resides a few miles west of town, was here and called at the News office. He is optimistic over the fine prospect of a bumper oat crop.

Hewitt News
MR. WHITFIELD of the Baptist Church preached here. HOWARD BAKER and family went to Ardmore. There is no news as everybody is busy at work.

DR. J. O. BRADSHAW, ISAAC ROBERTS, DR. GROSS, and TAYLOR CAVINS of Orr were here to attend the sale of the bankrupt stock.

MR. ELLIS of Sugden was here to bid on the bankrupt stock.

DR. M. BRADSHAW left for Ardmore to attend the state bankers association.

J. H. BETTIS of near Dixie was trading here.

Ahpestone, May 3,-- In the preliminary trial of MRS. HATTIE CORNISH, charged with the murder of her husband ELMER CORNISH, the state failed to break down the story of self defense related by the accused. Justice of the Peace G. B. BOYD released her from custody, holding that the evidence was not sufficient to bound her over for district court. ELMER CORNISH was related to J. H. and W. L. CORNISH here. They had not seen him since he was a small boy and knew nothing about his character.

Born to Mr. and Mr. J. CATES, four miles south of Cornish, a ten pound boy on Saturday, May 4.

MRS. W. C. HOGAN has received the sad news of the death of her cousin DR. JEP BENSON of Throckmorton, Texas who died from spinal meningitis two weeks ago. Dr. Benson formerly lived at Dixie. His brother DR. NELSE BENSON and MRS.MARY MEANS, who formerly lived at Cornish, were quarantined as a result of attending him during his illness,

R. J. CREEL made a business trip to Francis.

O. C. HARRIS bought the bankrupt stock of general merchandise of R. J. CREEL that was sold at auction here last Tuesday then sold it to W. A. CREEL who will conduct the business now.

BERRY SESSIONS has a new threshing machine and will be ready to threshing for farmers.

WRIGHT Withdraws, DRISKELL Enters
Sheriff JOHN WRIGHT withdrew from the election race and his office deputy, FRANK DRISKELL, announce to succeed him. Driskell has resided on the east side of the county for 35 years and enjoys wide acquaintances.

Celebrate Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary
Last Wednesday, May 15, Elder and Mrs. FRANCIS M. TAYLOR of Cornish celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married in Rockcastle, Kentucky May 15, 1862, moving from there to Brazos, Texas in 1882, then in 1892, came to the Indian Territory and settle near Cornish. For more than six years, Mr. Taylor has been postmaster at Cornish, and although he is 70 years old, he is active and capable of much hard work. They have 11 children living, a number of grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Thirteen and Two
An interesting ball game was played at Atlee last Sunday between the Cornish and Grady teams. Quite a little crowd of rooters and fans for the home team accompanied the kids. The Grady team was supported and strengthened by some of the Ryan high school crack players who went down in defeat with ARTHUR GOODE in the box and JOE BENSON behind the bat.

W. F. PETIFILS is a Democratic candidate for county tax assessor, having living in Ryan 20 years.

Shooting at Ardmore
Ardmore, May 12—An altercation at a local hotel Sunday afternoon between CAL STEWART and J. C. WASHINGTON, two prominent ranchmen of this county, resulted in Stewart receiving a bullet wound in the leg from a gun in the hands of WASHINGTON. When the two men met in the hotel, Washington pulled a gun and Stewart ran to him, grabbing the weapon, but it went off three times, only one shot taking effect. Both men had their hands on the weapon at the time. The wound is not serious. Washington was arrested. Neither would make a statement and the cause is unknown. Stewart was unarmed when the meeting took place.

Atlee News
LUM RICHARD of Ryan visited here. JIM GEORGE went to Ryan on business. Mr. and Mrs. GOLDSMITH of Grady visited friends here Saturday and Sunday. The Grady ball team met defeat when they crossed bats with Cornish. Mr. and Mrs. M. S. STIDHAM were guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. WRATISHAW Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. BEN TULLIS were guests of Mr. and Mrs. JOHN WESTBURY Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. DAVIS were guests of Mr. and Mrs. NICK GEORGE Sunday afternoon.

E. C. MORRIS of Waurika is visiting his daughter MRS. C. A. DULANEY and other relatives here.

MISS HELEN DENNIS of the Mountain Home community visited friends here.

MARION STIDHAM of Atlee was here on business.

HANDK DULANEY left for Greer County where he will operate his big thresher this season.

Z. L. BOLES and W. P. HARWELL transacted business at Ardmore.

J. A. CUMMINS returned from Waurika where he went with JACKSON and TURNER who shipped a car of fat stock to Kansas City.

W. C. DOWNING visited his family in Ardmore.

Deputy Sheriff L. C. MCCRAY arrested MONK DULANEY on charge of violating federal liquor laws and carried him to Muskogee to answer to federal authorities.

A.W. HAMMONS transacted business in Fort Worth.

Died of Whooping Cough
DAVID, the 12 months old son of Mr. and Mrs. TOM STEWART, who reside a few miles south of Cornish, died Tuesday night from whooping cough. Interment was in the Cornish cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart formerly lived in Cornish.

Hewitt News
MR. REXROAT was here assessing taxes. BRO. G. W. THOMPSON of Reck preached here. MISS MYRTLE ADDY returned from visiting her brother MARVIN at Alex. There was an entertainment at home of DR. CRANFILS. GEORGE DRUMMOND bought the ROY WHEELER property and moved in. MISS EFFIE DRUMMOND of Lone Grove visited her brother here. MRS. CANTRELL went to Waurika, her former home, to visit friends. MRS. LIZZIE COLBERT of Ardmore is visiting relatives here. Our school closed last Friday with a picnic at the grove northwest of town. Most of the pupils made good grades and advanced well and we consider that PROF. PARDUE and his assistants closed a successful term.

Orr News
The Orr school closed last Friday and we had a nice entertainment Friday night. MISSES GRACE PATTEN and DORA FREDHOLM, the assistant teachers, left to visit relatives. MRS. S. A. BASSE, who has been visiting J. H. GRIZZELL, her brother, and his family, will leave for Los Angeles, California. MISS J. GRIZZELL will leave for Durant to attend the state normal. JOHN PUCKETT of Robison visited here. Mr. and Mrs. TOM GRIZZELL are the proud parents of a fine boy. JOHN PALMER is visiting his parents here. Mr. and Mrs. FRANK HAMILTON were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. CAN SMITH Sunday. TIMOTHY ROBERTS returned from visiting relatives at Fort Worth.

Accidentally Killed
TOM WILLIAMS, who resides three miles west of Atlee, was here last Sunday to get a coffin for the body of JOHN GRIFFITH, nearly 60 years old who was the victim of the accidental discharge of a shotgun in the hands of Mr. Williams. The two men were hunting in the Mud Creek bottom, squirrel hunting, about 6:00 p.m. Saturday. Finding a squirrel in a tree, Mr. Williams fired one shot and wounded the squirrel which ran from the tree to the ground. Griffith followed the squirrel, and by some means, the gun discharged, hitting Griffith in the thigh with some shot going into the bladder, which resulted in death eight hours later. Physicians were summoned to no avail. Mr. Griffith was buried at Atlee Monday.

Quiet Election Tuesday
Town officials elected: Democrats: R. J. CREEL, town justice; A. A. MORRIS, treasurer; R. L. CROW, clerk; L. C. MCCRAY, marshal; Trustee Ward 1, S. O. TAYLOR; Ward 2, L. B. JACKSON; Ward 3, W. P. HARWELL; Ward 4, G. C. HARRIS; Socialist candidates, WILLIAM DULANEY as town justice; T. J. DULANEY as trustee Ward 2.

BOB BROWN for Re-Election of clerk of district court. He is a pioneer citizen.

Died
MRS. WILLIAMS, sister of G.M. HOLMAN, died at her home 3 miles northwest of Cornish, Tuesday morning May 21. She was stricken with typhoid and complications set in. She leaves six children; the oldest is only 12 years old. Interment was in the Cornish cemetery Wednesday.

Dr. and Mrs. S. M. BOND are moving from Grady to Cornish. The doctor will practice dentistry. They are occupying the G. T. BENNETT residence.

P. H. MILNER was appointed county engineer.

New Miss Clift
JAY G. CLIFT was all smiles when he came down town Saturday and reported the advent of a baby girl in his household. In distributing cigars among his friends, he will proceed with his campaign for county attorney.

JOHN DARNELL, PETE BUTLER, SID and RUFUS SMITH, PETE MCCANN, P. H. CARTER, G. C. HARRIS, T. J. DULANEY, J. P. DULANEY and others attended court at Ardmore.

W. R. CATLETT of Knoxville, Tennessee is here visiting his daughter MS. C. M. ELDER. He will spend a week here.

JOHN HARPER of Orr was here on business.

MRS. J. B. THRONBERRY of Trinidad, Colorado is visiting her sister MRS. J. T MORRIS four miles northwest of town. She had the News sent to her brother in Trinidad.

N. E. BROOKS, W. P. HARWELL, H. A. KERLEY and HACK ROBBINS went to Waurika on business.

R. W. BECKHAM is in from his farm just west of town and called at the News office.

DR. BOB WILSON of Doyle, who was shot three weeks ago by Mr. STEWART, died from the wounds Tuesday. He was a brother to DR. W.A WILSON who resides here and is now critically ill.

Atlee Items
REV. CUMBIE preached here. Several people, old and young, attended the singing at ED BARNES’ home Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. G. L. BENNETT returned from visiting relatives, Mr. and Mrs. NICK GEORGE were guests of Mr. and Mrs. JIM GEORGE Sunday. JOHN DANIEL and C. E. HOE were in Sugden. J. A. GEORGE and S. A MCDANIEL were in Ryan on business.

DR. C. STEVENS reports a new boy at the home of Mr. and Mrs. COLE 4 miles northeast of town Tuesday, May 21.

J. H. NEWBY of the Mountain Home community was in town and reported the best crops prospects in years.

Mr. and Mrs. SPENCER MELTON, five miles southeast of town, are the happy parents of a new boy born May 17.

JOE HUFFER of Addington, candidate for district clerk, was here visiting.

Closing Exercises at Mountain Home School
One of the best school entertainments was given at Mountain Home last Friday night at the close of school. A nice program with recitations, dialogues, and singing was rendered. The patrons are pleased with the service of PROF. JOE PFEFFER.

WOOD-STEPHENSON
WILLIAM C. WOOD and MISS MARY STEPHENSON, two of our most popular and deserving young people, were married at Waurika last Saturday, REV. H. ELLIS, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating. The ceremony was performed in the presence of few witnesses, among them were REV. JOSEPH RUSSELL, pastor of the Cornish Methodist Church, and MISS ERCHAL CREEL, friends of the couple. The newly weds accompanied by Mr. Russell and Miss Creel went to Lawton and the Fort Sill Military Reservation. The bride is a very popular young lady of many lovable traits of character, pretty and accomplished, and will be a real helpmeet to Mr. Wood. The groom has resided here 18 months, employed at the News.

W. W. WOODWORTH has the lumber for two new dwelling to be constructed near town, one on the MAT VAUGHN place southwest of town and one a few miles north.

Atlee News
Several boys of Spanish Fort, Texas attended the ball game between Grady and Cornish. Mr. and Mrs. WILL WALKER were guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. GEORGE. Mr. and Mrs. MARK ASHURTH of the Plainview community visited Mr. and Mrs. NICK GEORGE. Mr. and Mrs. TOM CASWELL were guests of Mr. and Mrs. NICK GEORGE Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. E. GOLDSMITH were guests of Mr. and Mrs. LEWIS KEATON. J.M. DANIEL of near Cornish visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. DANIEL.

Shooting Near Waurika
A difference over the ownership of a few feet of barbed wire was the cause of a shooting six miles southeast of Waurika last Sunday between Mr. WELCH and Mr. TINDELL. A secwire fence was opened and a wire fence was disposed with on which Welch claimed a piece of wire 30 feet in length and took the wire off the fence. Tindell protested the wire was his and demanded Welch to return it which Welch did not. Welch was on his way to drive stock to pasture Friday when Tindell accosted him. Tindell used his revolver to pound Welch over the head. Then Saturday as Welch drove his cattle, he carried his shotgun and when he met Tindell, the shooting took place. The dispute involves the entire families of Welch and Tindell and they were arrested, some gave peace bonds.

Trade Day for Cornish
Arrangements were made for a Trade Day for Cornish, the second Monday of each month.

Linen Shower
The friends of W.C. WOOD and MISS MARY STEPHENSON, who were recently married, met at the future home of the bride and groom May 23 and gave them a linen shower. They were the recipients of many valuable and useful housekeeping articles.


Enid, Oklahoma—The jury in the case of the state vs JAMES HOBBS for the murder of MATT VOGELLE returned a verdict of guilty and he was sentenced for forty years.

Hobart—ROY BENEDICT, secretary of the commercial club and editor of the Hobart Republican, and MISS BESSIE ALBERTA BURDICK were married at the home of the bride in the country.

Fort Smith, Arkansas—While pitching hay, F. W. CRENSHAW of Winthrop fell on a pitchfork and received fatal injuries.

MRS. G. T. BENNETT and daughter MISS GEORGIA visited MRS. JOHN BURKETT five miles south of town.

W. H. BAKER of Grady passed through en route to Ardmore then to Hugo on business.

J. M. ROBBERSON of Loco was here.

ED DOWD of Atlee was here transacting business and shaking hands.

H. A. WATSON returned from Honey Grove, Texas where he visited his parents.

W. C. DOWNING visited his family at Ardmore.

DR. M. BRADSHAW had business at Ardmore.

RUBE BROWN and VIRGIL BIFFLE were here on business.

J. F. WILLIAMS of near Claypool had business here.

Waurika will have another newspaper. J. A. STOCKTON, editor and owner of the Hastings News, is moving his plant to Waurika.
