Before Oklahoma became a state in 1907, a good part of it was known as Indian Territory (I.T.) and made up of several Native American nations. As its pioneers aged, Oklahoma took steps to preserve their history. In the mid-1930's the Works Progress Administration (WPA) sent out more than 100 writers to interview over 11,000 residents about their migration to I.T. and experiences. The personal histories of these early Oklahomans are fascinating. Not just Native Americans, but people from many nationalities were interviewed.
