Okay, I think I now have a complete answer for you. It seems that all three drowned in a fishing accident. There was no evidence of foul play (gunshot wounds or such) found.

First, the complete obituary (I found a more legible printing):

"Joint Rites Set For Victims (Sun, 7 Apr 1985)

Joint funeral services for drowning victims Robert L. Brown, Andrew L. "Sid" Brown and Patrick DeWayne Warhop are set for 2 pm today in the Idabel Junior High School Auditorium, with the Rev. Howard Ellis officiating.

Robert Brown was born 28 Feb 1958; Andrew "Sid" Brown was born 8 Apr 1957; and Patrick DeWayne Warhop was born 19 Dec 1962, all three (born) in Idabel.

Robert Brown is survived by two daughters, LaShandrea and Mylice Brown, and one son, Robert Brown Jr, all of Idabel.

Sid Brown is survived by three sons, Synica DeWayne Brown of Idabel, Michael and Antwian Brown, both of DeKalb, Texas.

Both are survived by their father, Andrew Brown of Idabel; three brothers, Floter Warhop Jr of California, Willie Warhop and David Warhop, both of Idabel, and four sisters, Pat Warhop King and Barbara Brown Johnson, both of Idabel, Mamie Cooper and Estella J. Williams, both of Dallas, Texas.

Patrick Warhop is survived by his wife, Sheila Warhop of Oklahoma City; one son Patrick Warhop Jr of Oklahoma City; his mother Mamie Cooper of Dallas; one brother, Eric Cooper of Dallas; one sister Detrice Lashun Cooper of Dallas; a grandfather, Floter Warhop of Idabel; and one nephew, Corey Cooper of Dallas.

Arrangements and burial in Maple Springs Cemetery are under the direction of Baker Funeral Home of Idabel."

Thus, it appears that Patrick Warhop was technically Robert and Sid's nephew, as his mother was their sister Mamie. I dug back into old microfiche copies of the McCurtain Gazette newspaper at the library and found the following story:

"Three Drown in '41 Cutoff (Wed, 3 Apr 1985)

Three persons were drowned in '41 cutoff lake near Red River southeast of Idabel late Tuesday afternoon, according to State Trooper Don Dands and the Idabel Fire Department Rescue I crew.

The victims were identified as Robert Lee Brown (26) of Idabel, Andrew Lee Brown (27) of Idabel, and Patrick DeWayne Warhop (23) of Tulsa.

A call to the McCurtain County Sheriff's Office about 4:20pm Tuesday sent deputies, the IFD Rescue Unit, and Lake Patrol Trooper Don Sands to the scene, about 1 1/2 miles NW of the Harris Store.

Finding a capsized flat-bottom boat and caps floating on the water, dragging and recovering operations began immediately. All three bodies were recovered from depths of 12 to 15 feet, with the recovery of all three victims completed about 9:15pm.

Daniel Walker, Harold Miller and their wives, who were fishing in the area at the time of the incident reported that they saw 3 men fishing, with one standing and the other two seated. They boated further up the lake out of view and when they returned they found the boat capsized, with caps, boat paddle, and fishing gear floating nearby. They immediately notified the Sheriff's Office.

W.E. Floyd of the State Medical Examiner's Office indicated that the deaths of all three of the victims were by drowning."

Thus, by what I am able to find, it appears that they were the unfortunate victims of a fishing/boating accident ... not a homicide. Neither the medical examiner or the funeral home reported finding any injuries or indications of having been shot, nor did the witnesses describe having heard any gunshots. I also note the absence of any life saving devices found either floating on the water or on any of the three.

Describing (or reading) the circumstances of the death of a relative is difficult, but I think that we can safely rule out that any of three were victims of a homicide.

If I can be of any further service, please contact me via email. Maple Springs Cemetery is located a few miles west of Idabel (near the old Cisco area) near the Maple Springs Church.
