The following obituary published "Free Press", Kingfisher County, Oklahoma, 15 Mar 1894. Contains incorrect surname "SLUSSER". Name is "SLUSHER". "Alfred E. Slusser (Slusher), on the 10th inst., at his home in this city. Comrade Slusser (Slusher) was a Virginian by births, having been born in Warfield (Should be Moorefield), Hardy Co., Aug 18, 1842. Eighteen years afterwards, with his parents, he relocated to Illinois. Dec 23, 1863, he enlisted in Co. E., 51st Vol. Inf., and continued in the service until the close of the war. During the service he was a prisoner at Andersonville for five months, having been taken prisoner at Franklin, Tenn. After his discharge he returned to his Illinois home and was married, Aug. 25th, 1867, to Elizabeth J. Kellogg. He lived for sixteen years at Blanchester, (Clinton County), O. (Ohio), and from thence came to Kansas and Oklahoma. In '87 he was twice the victum of paralysis, once in July and the second time in August, on account of which he was permanently disabled. He leaves behind a wife and seven lving children, one child having preceded him to the graveyard years ago. Comrade Slusser's (Slusher's) last years have been years of suffering and struggles with poverty, and his death, brought on by his own deliberate act, was one of the most melancholy character. He became to thotoughly discouraged on account of his helpless condition, that he prefered death to longer suffering. After all, while men are disposed to condemn the course adopted by Comrade Slusser (Slusher), it was the act of a soldier; an act that showed that he was not afraid of death - that having become a burdon to himself and his family, by misfortunes which he could not avert, he was ready to put and end to it all. Good is Good; he is merciful; He knows the hearts of all men, and His judgement will be tampered with Mercy. So they go; nearly every week the Free Press is called upon to tell the brief, sad story of some comrade who had received his fina dscharge."
