Looking for information on Leanna Bowers born September 1, 1851 in Franklin County, Arkansas. Some handwritten papers I have state that LeAnna was orphaned. Her biological family died in a flu epidimic in 1864, when she was 13 years old. She believed her mother to be a full blood Cherokee Indian, but was unable to prove it. Her father died last and then she was taken in by a white family, that tried to return her to her mother's sister (Indian woman). Her mother's sister was believed to be near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. They had large families of their own, and were strangers to her. She cried to stay with the white neighbors. She was 13 and remained with them until she married, which was about 5 years later. She married James Franklin Statham August 26 1869 in Webb City. They remained in Franklin county through at least 1880, but by the 1900 census, they were in Oklahoma. Any additional information about Leanna Bowers family would be greatly appreciated. k_statham@sbcglobal.net
