Hi Katheryn Raper,
It is my belief that my Great Grandmother's maiden surname is not Martin. That Melissa A Martin appears to have married another man, had children and to have died elsewhere. My Great Grandmother, Malisa A UNKNOWN PIERCE, wife of John Henry PIERCE, died in Carter County, Oklahoma.[Birth: 02 AUG 1838 in Illinois, United States, Death: Dec 1904 in Graham, Carter, Oklahoma, USA] Her birthplace is also in question as I have seen Illinois, Tennessee and Iowa referenced as her birth state. The most likely location seems to be Tennessee.
On my Grandmother Emley Sylvia PIERCE SMITH'S Wheeler County, Texas, Death Certificate her mother's maiden name is listed as "MASHBURN."That , however, does not seem possible as there is no Malisa A Mashburn available in the US census.
A grandson of Samuel Huelan Pierce who lived in Washington apparently was the source of Melissa A Martin as the wife of John Henry Pierce. That man who recently died was the great grandson of John H and Malisa/Melissa A Pierce, as I am.He had contacted Bob Pierce, a researcher who has recently posted a book on the descendants of Chesley C Pierce and Mary Massey, who are the parents of John H Pierce, Mahulda "Hulda" Pierce, and Ambrose Hueland Pierce among others. In an email Bob Pierce stated that that was the source of the Martin name.I never knew that fairly close relative, although I had heard of him.
Neither of my Smith grandparents passed on much information about their families to their many children or grandchildren. Some of the information that they did tell seems to be quite different than the information which I have found in my research.
I think there is a possibility that Malisa/Melissa A and Elizabeth McCorkle could be related in some way, but I have not been able to find Samuel and Elizabeth's McCorkle family as of yet. They are brother and sister.
McCorkle, Manulda and McCorkle, Samuel are buried in Lane Cemetery, Loy, Madison County, Arkansas. GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 36.00940, Longitude: -93.56000
……………………………… .........
After Samuel McCorkle’s sister, Elizabeth McCorkle, and her husband, Ambrose Hueland Pierce, the brother ofHuldah/ MahuldaPIERCEMCCORKLE, were killed by bushwhackers about June of 1875, Samuel and Mahulda raised their two surviving children. They moved to Arkansas.
……………………………… .........
In 1860 in the Hickory County Census W. J. Starkey and his wife Malissa and a baby Mary J, one month old, have Elizabeth M. Corkle, age 19, b. MO, living with them.
Samuel McCorkle, age 21, b. MO, a laborer by occupation was living with Jesse and Winny Crain.
According to an email Ireceived in June, 2010, from descendants of Elizabeth McCorkle, I think probably the 19 year old who was living with W. J. and Malissa Starkey in 1860, married Ambrose Hueland Pierce. John Henry Pierce had an older brother by that name. Elizabeth’s brother Samuel McCorkle married Mahulda Pierce, and John H Pierce had a sister named Hulda Pierce. When Ambrose H Pierce and his wife Elizabeth McCorkle lost their lives about June, 1875, according to this email, Samuel McCorkle and his wife took in their two children from then on.
Ambrose H.PIERCEand his wife, Elizabeth MCCORKLE PIERCE were murdered by bushwhackers on probably 06 JUNE 1975 on their son’s sixth birthday. This may have occurred near ElDoradoSprings, Missouri.Their son and daughter survived by hiding under a bed.The two orphans were raised afterwards by Samuel MCCORKLE and Mahulda “Hulda”PIERCE MCCORKLE.Ambrose Huland Pierce is the brother of Mahulda "Hulda" Pierce McCorkle. Elizabeth McCorkle Pierce is the sister of Samuel McCorkle. They resided in Madison County, Arkansas.....................................
In the 1860 census for Hickory County, Missouri, the then single 19 year old Elizabeth McCorkle was living with W J Starkey and his wife Malissa A Martin Starkey and their new baby Mary.W J apparently died in the early 1860's, but so far no record has surfaced as to what became of him.Of course, that was the time of the Civil War, and of great violence in Missouri.
Although most of the Pierce family researchers accept that Martin is Malisa A's maiden surname, I have seen no evidence to prove that to be the case.Malissa A Unknown Starkey was married to John Henry Pierce in the 1870 census for Stone County, Missouri. They had several children including Emley Emma" Sylvia Pierce Smith, the grandmother of a group which I refer to as the "Smith Cousins." I am part of that group of first cousins. The story was in an email received in June, 2010, from a descendant of George Washington PIERCE who suffered this tragedy.
My family tree is posted under my name Laurence Alvis Smithon Ancestry.com"Texas Panhandle Pioneers:Smith/Pierce and Matthews/Cartwright:Their Ancestors and Their Families"I still have much information and names of family that I have not had the time to post.
I hope this answers some of your questions. However, please remember that there may be major mistakes in my research.
I appreciate contact with all relatives and researchers of my relatives.
