Waterspout’s Awful Work
Nine Lives Swept into Eternity at Foss, OK
Twenty Houses Washed Away--Inhabitants Left Homeless and Destitute--
Searching for Dead--Property Destroyed
A special from Foss, OK:
A cloudburst at this place Sunday evening about 9:00 drowned nine persons, washed away 20 houses and did damage estimated $25,000 upward. For 40 minutes, the rain fell in torrents, inundating everything in the lowlands causing all streams to rise rapidly and flood the town.
Foss is located on a creek, which when the waters from the adjacent lands rushed into it soon left its banks. The flood waters came rushing down upon the town in huge waves, sweeping everything before them. The citizens had absolutely no warning of the danger. Hundreds of people were caught in the homes and carried downstream, nine of whom drowned. Scores of others had miraculous escapes. The scenes when the flood waters struck the town beggar description. Cries for assistance came from every hand and many heroic deeds were enacted.
The houses which were washed away were principally frail structures and were quickly demolished by the raging torrents. A number of inhabitants of the same saved their lives by climbing upon them and floating down the stream.
About a mile of the Choctaw (railroad) track was washed away,.
Four bodies have been recovered and the search is being kept up by relatives and citizen. A relief committee consisting of prominent citizens was quickly organized and is caring for the homeless and destitute.

McLish Is Its Name
The Town of Milburn on Blue Will Be Known as McLish
McLish on the Blue River on the C. O. & G. R. R.--May 5
The railroad depot of this place is finished, the crew of carpenters has struck camp and gone.
The depot is a nice building in part two story, complete apparently in every detail. About the last thing that was done was the putting up the sign “McLish.” The town being named by the R. R. Co. in honor of one of the best and most popular men in the Territory, it was formerly known as Milburn, the post office being in that name . We presume, however, that steps will be taken to have it altered to the name of the depot and plat of the town. We think the grand opening for the sale of lots at this place will soon be advertised.

McKinney, May 4--A fine rain fell here last night which was very beneficial to all crops, especially the oats, prospects for fine crops are very flattering and our farmers are about up with their work.
Several people attended the funeral service at New Hope today.
A. ZELLNER and wife of near Ardmore and a Mr. IRWIN of Arkansas (a brother of Mrs. ZELLNER) were here last week visiting relatives.
W. T. MORGAN and GREEN MORGAN received a letter from their mother at the Stephensville, Texas this evening stating that their father was not expected to live. The boys left at once for his bedside.
JOE IIAMS of Corinth, Mississippi was here this week, visiting his old Mississippi friends. Mr. Iiams expects to return to Corinth in a few days, but has about 104 degrees of Territory fever which will likely cause his return shortly to the Territory, we need all such men as Mr. Iiams that we can get.
HENRY ZELLNER and family are visiting relatives at Brock since Friday.
We failed to report the singing at J. E. BUCKLEY’S last Sunday night.
B. B. BECKHAM and family visited since Saturday near Ardmore.

Farmer Almost Decapitated
Wagoner, May 6--While hunting near here, HENRY HIGHTOWER, a well known farmer of Clarksville, attempted to blow some dirt out of the barrel of his gun, which he supposed to be unloaded, when the piece was discharged, killing him instantly. The unfortunate man was almost decapitated by the heavy charge of shot with which the gun was loaded. He was accompanied by two son when the accident happened.

MISS LOTTIE BROWN left today for Norman for a month’s visit.

W. A. GILLIAM of Ardmore passed through this morning enroute to the HNERY CAIN place after some cattle.

The tracklayers are busy at work today and expect the finish up the gap today.
The extension of the telephone lien from Earl to New Mannsville is about completed and the connections will be made this afternoon.

SUMMERS HARDY and MR. ARCHER went to Ardmore today.
Tishomingo
Quite a number of people are in town today.
There is considerable excitement here over our prospect of securing a district court at Tishomingo.
W. C. WELLS left today on a business trip to Roff and Ada.
A fight which was no serious consequence occurred here yesterday afternoon. The parties are up before Mayor RENNIE today.
The legislature is still in session, but will adjourn this afternoon.
MISS MABEL DONOHOO and GEORGE DAVIS were married at the home of the bride’s parents Monday night.
Ravia
PROFESSORS CAMPBELL and HAWKINS are here from Wynnewood and are preparing a business school in Ravia. They say the school will be here permanently.
G. W. BAKER is here from Troy today.
GOVERNOR MOSLEY is here from Wapanucka.
J. J. JOHNSON of Woodville is here instituting a Woodmen circle.
Dr. MORRIS of Wapanucka is in town today.
Cumberland
GUY GRANBURY and MISS MAY GWINN of this place were married at Madill Sunday. MR. & MRS. GRANBURY went to Woodville today.
MR. MCCOLLUM is here today from Madill on business.

Francis Postoffice Robbery
On the 30th of April in Francis at night, while it was thundering and lightning, some parties gained entrance to the postfixes and having the purpose of robbery in their head, proceeded to blow the safe with dynamite. The explosion was so loud and the destruction so great it disturbed the whole neighborhood and the would be robbers ran away and left their booty.
DEPUTY BOB NESTER, with his usual zeal and energy, ran down and arrested JAMES BURNS and ASHER BAYNE, and had sufficient evidence against them to have them bound over after their trial was over before Commissioner TALBOT. Deputy Nester brought them over last night and lodged them in jail.

Be it resolve by the Lincoln Republicans club of Ardmore in regular meeting assembled:
First, We are unalterably opposed to the appointment of an assistant district attorney for the Southern District not recommended by the U. S. Attorney for said district and the judge of said district.
Second. We condemn the actions of other Republicans of Indian Territory who seek to control the patronage of this district without regard to the wishes of the Republicans thereof and
Third. We earnestly recommend for the appointment as assistant district attorney for this district, Mr. CLINTON Q. BUNN who is a good lawyer, a loyal Republican and a resident of the district.

District Cout
The district court has been busy passing on cases, continuing some and disposing of them in various ways.
J. P. MULLEN was appointed guardian and administrator of minor heirs of the estate of SARAH S. SANDES. Mr. Mullen made a bond of $15,000. The SANDERS are all Indians and this court assumes jurisdiction because they have not gone before any tribal court.
In the case of CLARK LOWE, for disturbing a religious worship, defendant pleaded guilty and fined $15 plus costs.
MISS J. ZIMMERMAN of Ardmore was appointed notary public.

His Eighty-Second Birthday
Yesterday, J. W. PALMER was 82 years of age. Grandpa Palmer was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia. In 1857 he moved to east Tennessee where he lived until 8 years ago when he moved to Ardmore and has been ever since. Mr. Palmer is still active and able to walk the streets, and able to sell books, thus helping the family along a little in his feeble way. He has 7 children living, his wife having died 15 years ago. One of the birthday presents, Mr. Palmer received yesterday is a fine photograph of himself, donated by S. S. COLE, the photographer.

Rush Springs
Rush Springs, May 5--The health of our town is good at present.
It has rained for two days and nights nearly steady and still raining. Farmers are wanting it to quit so they can work as corn needs plowing, corn looks well, weeds are doing well too, cotton is all about planted, grass is fine and cattle doing well.
C. W. BIRCHARD and wife and Mrs. PEFFER and daughter made a visit to the Comanche country Sunday, they are well pleased with prospects in the new country.
Townsite appraisers made their appearance in town one day last week and went immediately at work. They are about half way through with their work here.
The ice cream supper given last Friday night at the EAGLE hotel for the benefit of the Rush Springs cornet band was an enjoyable affair to the young people. Music, ice cream, delicious cake and pretty girls in abundance.
ROBERT COFFMAN left for Wapanuck Saturday.
S.W. BOND of Boyd, Texas, a brother of Dr. Bond, the dentist, is up on a visit.
PROFESSOR RANKIN has been all smiles for the past week. We are told that is a pretty little girl.

H. D. MCCOY, one of the contractors on the Union depot, is here and will commence work at once on the depot.
REV. J. M. GROSS left on the early morning train to Dallas to attend the Methodist conference.
HARRY J. STIEFEL will leave for a stay at Galveston. The DailyArdmoreite will visit him regularly.
E. R. POOLE of Elk who is in the city serving on the grand jury was a called at the office today.
DR. J. F. YOUNG will go to Davis Sunday where he will deliver an address as the Unveiling of Woodmen of the World monument.
REV. JOHN L. WILLIAMS of the Carter Avenue Church leaves for Dallas to attend the Methodist conference.
J. P. COLLIN, representing the Oklahoma Mill and Elevator Company of Oklahoma City was here today in the interests of that concern.
REV. J. F. PRICE of Marian, Kentucky, who is conducting a series of meeting at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, was a welcomed visitor to our office.
J. S. B. APOLLOS is back from a 4 or 5 months visit to Kentucky, Mrs. Apollos accompanied her husband. The trip has helped them both. He now weighs about 195 pounds.
TOM WYONT left yesterday to assume his duties with the A & C surveyors at Cumberland. He was accompanied by his brother, CLEVE, who has accepted a position with them.
A. J. BLANKENSHIP, formerly of GURLEY, ALABAMA, who has been in our city two months, left for at trip to Texas. We expect him to return and make Ardmore his future home.
MRS. L.N. MURDOCK left last night for Minneapolis, Minnesota where she goes in the interest of the Northwest National Insurance Company. She will be gone 5 or 6 weeks.
UNCLE CALVIN YOUNG, CHARLES GRAHAM, and other Mississippians who have been here visiting the family of J. E. C. ALBRIGHT have returned home. They were accompanied home by MRS. ALBRIGHT and MRS. STOVALL who will visit there some time.
MRS. G. T. BENTHUSEN of HALSTEAD, KANSAS arrived here yesterday and will remain her some time visiting her son, DR. G. W. BENTHUSEN. MR. & MRS. BENTHUSEN are making preparations to locate here within a few months.
H. C. BENNETT left here fro Chickasha where he has accepted a position as bookkeeper for the firm of CUNNINGHAM, EDWARD, & BOYD. Mr. Bennett is a clever bookkeeper and we wish him abundant success in his new field.
MR. & MRS. TOM GRAHAM came from Marietta yesterday and spent the day with her parents, MR. & MRS. L. L. BLAKE. Mr. & Mrs. Graham returned home in the evening, accompanied by MISS JULIA BLAKE, who will visit them for a few days.
