[sent June 6]

Today is June 6th, the anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy,
France. On this date John L. Ahearn commanded the second tank to make it
ashore on Utah Beach. He was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross
after he was seriously wounded attempting to rescue men trapped in a
minefield. I've added new photos and additional text to his memorial page
at http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~aherns/ahdday.htm

There are now 3,625 obituaries on the Ahern website. The earliest new
obituary is for Anthony Thomas Ahearne of Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin,
17 March 1969. The most recent obituary is for Daniel E. Ahern of Atlanta,
Georgia, 3 June 2009. Those of you who attended the Ahern gathering in
Cork in 2001 will remember Dan, who was part of the large contingent from
Syracuse, New York. His brother, Fr. John Ahern who also attended,
survives him.

For those of you whose Aherns were from County Cork, the 1911 census for
Cork is now available at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
