[sent May 8th] Today is May 8th. On this date in 1918 the Bridgeport [CT] Telegram reported that Cornelius Ahern was a pall bearer at the funeral of Joseph Allard. And on this date in 2007 history was made in Belfast as a governing body that shares power between Unionists and Nationalists met for the first time since Ireland was partitioned in 1922. And Aherns were there. Not just "cousin" Bertie as Taoiseach of Ireland, but Patrick Ahern, brother of Dan Ahern, Vice President of our Ahern Clan Association who managed to get a seat in the gallery. If you want a little history lesson on the Irish Rebellion and subsequent Civil War, see the latest film from Ken Loach, "The Wind That Shakes the Barley". It's still playing in some theaters in Massachusetts. And see http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahernejp.htm and http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/paddy2.jpg for two Aherns who were involved in the "troubles" of that time in Ireland. For our Australian cousins, I've added the records of Aherns in Freemantle Prison at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahcrim.htm#freemantle I'd also like to remind everyone that the index to Aherns who came through Ellis Island at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahimmig.htm#ellis is just that - an index. If you see anyone of your family in that list you should look at the website that is linked from our page as it has images of the actual passenger manifests on which each person had to provide information as to where they were from and who their next of kin was and where they were going in the U. S. There is a wealth of info there that should not be overlooked. For those of you who are on Long Island, I'll be addressing the Irish Family History Forum in Bethpage, New York on Saturday, May 19. See http://www.ifhf.org/index.php for details. If any of you will be in Arlington, Massachusetts in the near future, be sure and see the new museum exhibit at the Arlington Historical Society featuring my Ahern ancestors with photos and artifacts. For info, see http://www.arlingtonhistorical.org/ Jim Aherne from Galway <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/march16.htm> sent me an email with some clever wordplay that I would like to share so I've put it at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/mensa.htm I recall reading a study of how different ethnic groups approach humor and it seems that the Irish are particularly fond of word play. I know I am one of those who likes to mix up words and make bad puns. The Ahern Obituary pages have now passed the 3,325 mark. The earliest new obituary is for Rev. Peter J. Ahern, born in Wakefield, Mass. in 1889, who died in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, 26 September 1933. The most recent new obituary is for Vietnam veteran Peter J. O'Hearn of Malden, MA, 1 May 2007.
