[sent December 16] Today is December 16. On this day in 1944, 2nd Lieutenant John J. Ahern, Jr., ordered his crew to bale out and stayed at the controls of his fully- laden bomber to avoid crashing into the village of Bozeat, England. See http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ltjahern.htm for his memorial page. The Ahern obituaries page has passed the 3,150 mark. The earliest new obituary is for Edward Ahearn of Kendallville, Indiana, 11 March 1913. The most recent is for Joan M. (Christiansen) Ahearn of Methuen, Mass., 9 December 2006. I've added a new page of Aherns in the files of the U. S. Patent Office. One of the most prolific inventors seems to be one George O'Hearn of Gardner, Massachusetts with ten patents for furniture, baby carriages and go-carts. Women are represented, sometimes as witnesses on applications, but also as inventors of compartmental cookware and a bicycling skirt for ladies. It's not just U.S. inventors. There are patents from Canada and England, Australia and New Zealand. You can click on the links to view the applications and drawings. Some of them are fascinating. An advertising automaton? See http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahinvent.htm If you saw the movie "Flags of Our Fathers" you might be interested in an article about Lt. James J. Ahern's experiences on Iwo Jima. See http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ahnws205.htm#20/02/2005 Those of you who enjoyed my story about the fateful cup of coffee, might also enjoy reading of how I uncovered the connection to long lost cousins in Australia and elsewhere. See http://world.std.com/~ahern/goback.htm for that story. The Aherns in the news pages have been updated with the following stories: - U. S.
