The Throckmortons are coming. The Throckmortons are coming-- no not the great Gildersleeveof TV fame and no, not Mr. Throckmorton from the sci-fi spoof "Lobsterman from Mars".These are serious Throckmortons, although they all are used to kidding about their name. And they have a serious history, beginning with the founding of colonial America. And so, they will be eagerly gatheringfor their very first national meetingJune 16-21at "The WOODLANDS" in Williamsburg, VA tofind their roots, tourJamestown, Yorktown, and Throckmorton historical buildings in Gloucester county and hear their history, such as an address on "Throckmorton Boats and Ship Captains."They even have a website:www.throckmortonfamily.com.The website is maintained by Columbus resident Caroline Throckmorton Lewin, Ph.D. who is an avid family historian and reunion organizer.
The Throckmortonshave a longand proud history in the United States beginning with the founding of colonial America.John Throckmorton accompanied Roger Williams to the colonies, foundedseveral settlements in New England and was honored by the naming of the Throggs Neck area of Westchester County NY.

Throckmortons were frequent guests at the home of George Washington and several served under him in the Revolution.Virtually all Throckmortons are related but quite a few have never met theothers and literally will come to Throckorton 2002 to "find their roots." Genealogical lookups will be made available to those interested.
Two Throckmortons were prominent Civil war era governors.Oliver Hazard Perry Throck Morton, Gov. of Indiana, later served in the US Senate. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872 and a trusted advisor of Pres. Grant. He is listed in the State Dept. archives as an envoy to Great Britain.James Webb Throckmorton, a governorof Texas, served as a Confederate General and then in the U.S. House of Representatives.
