Erastus BACK moved into Williams County, Ohio in 1835 with all of his children:
Christiana Back
Sally Back
Erastus Gilbert Back
Emeline Anna Back
William Palmer Back
George Henry Back
except Christiana and Emiline. He sold his property in Chaplin (Windham Co., CT) and started for the "far West" with his children. It is reported that his son (Erastus) Gilbert went first and came back to get the rest of the family. They left the 1st of March, 1835 accompanied by 6 horses and three wagons. They camped and cooked by the wayside and their wagons furnished them shelter from the storms. When the reached Cleveland, they were informed that it would be impossible to cross the Black Swamp and accordingly they went on a boat as far as Toledo. There was no road built to the property purchased at what is now Bridgewater and they had to camp while a road and bridge were built. It took them 44 days to cover 1050 miles. The area where their land was was known as the thirty mile woods and among its inhabitants were Indians, bears, wolves and other wild animals.
They lived with a family named Smith until their log cabin was built of common woods. There was no sawn lumber nor any nails used in the construction of the home. They had to hollow out a boat which they used to go down the St. Josph River to get supplies in Adrian, Michigan--50 miles away. round trips took nearly a week.
