Hello, Rebecca. Yes, I would be interested in sharing information with you. What information do you have about DAVID WILLIAMS and his family? Which of David Williams’ sons are you descended from?
Here is the CATHARINE WILLIAMS story, as I have pieced it together. Information about sources is in parentheses.
WHO IS CATHARINE WILLIAMS?
CATHARINE WILLIAMS was married to DAVID FIN(D)LEY in Wayne County, Ohio, October 1, 1829. (Marriage Record, Wayne co, OH) They subsequently moved their family to Miami County, Indiana. (Deed for land, Miami County, IN, 1838). David died in 1846, and is buried in the Finley Cemetery. (Finley Cemetery Records, Miami County, IN, in a book by Tombaugh). Catharine is also buried there, but by the time she died, sometime after 1860, her surname was PENCE. 4 Finley children were buried there also:
Margaret A Finley 1834-1846, John Thompson Finley 1837-1854, Sarah C Finley 1842-1843, Elizabeth E 1844-1847. William, abt 1831-1899, my ancestor and the only other known child of David and Catharine, lived to raise a family, and I have not yet found where he is buried.
On September 6, 1846, CATHARINE (WILLIAMS) FINLEY married JOSEPH HALL in Miami County, IN (Miami County, IN Marriage Record). They had one known child, MARIETTA HALL, who was born about 1848 (1850 census, Miami County, IN) On September 22, 1854, CATHARINE, having been widowed again, married PHILLIP PENCE in Miami County, IN (Miami County, IN Marriage Record). They moved to Champaign County, OH, where she lived until at least 1860. (1860 census, Champaign County, OH)
HOW IS CATHARINE WILLIAMS RELATED TO THE WILLIAMS FAMILIES IN WAYNE COUNTY, OHIO?
I have concluded that CATHARINE (WILLIAMS) FIN(D)LEY is most likely the daughter of DANIEL WILLIAMS of Perry township, Wayne County, Ohio. Here are the steps I took to do this:
Of the 3 FIN(D)LEY families in western Wayne county circa 1820-1830, ARCHIBALD FINDLEY is the only one who could have been DAVID FIN(D)LEY’s father. (Used deductive reasoning here. The other two Fin(d)ley families (ADAM and ALEXANDER) are well documented in county histories. Archibald Fin(d)ley is not.
ARCHIBALD FIN(D)LEY lived in Perry township with his family in 1820. (Census records) After DAVID FINDLEY and CATHARINE WILLIAMS were married, both DAVID FIN(D)LEY and ARCHIBALD FIN(D)LEY were in Chester townships. (1830 census, Chester Township, Wayne County, Ohio)
The DAVID WILLIAMS, DANIEL WILLIAMS, and WILLIAM WILLIAMS families also resided in Perry and Chester townships. (1820-1830 census). In 1820 Archibald Fin(d)ley and his family were close neighbors to DANIEL WILLIAMS and DAVID WILLIAMS in Perry township.
Various Census records give an approximate birth year for CATHARINE (WILLIAMS) FIN(D)LEY as 1809. She would have been about 11 years old at the time of the 1820 census. (1850 census Miami county, Indiana, and 1860 census Champaign county, Ohio)
Having looked at Wayne county, Ohio, census records for the DANIEL WILLIAMS, DAVID WILLIAMS, and WILLIAM WILLIAMS families, I have concluded that DANIEL WILLIAMS is the only one of the three that had a daughter the age of CATHARINE WILLIAMS.
DAVID WILLIAMS would be the father of DANIEL WILLIAMS, since they lived next door to each other in Perry township. (1830 census)
