Greg; I have a letter written in 1866 from my G-G-G-Grandmother Catherine Lawyer to her daughter Elizabeth. She says that she heard from the "Sliffers" (Sic) and they are doing fine. No first names are given. Daughter Elizabeth was not in the same area as her mother when this letter was written. My Frederick and Catherine Lawyer (Lower, Lahr) born ca 1815 family was said to be from Germany and were living near Wilmot, Sugar Creek TWP, Stark County Ohio area until about 1855. At that time most of the family migrated to Whiteside County Illinois with the Swearingens from Springhill TWP., Fayette CO., PA and to Holmes CO., OH, Hurless/Leatherman family from (W) VA (likely Monongalia CO), Wetzel family from PA, Summit County then Tuscarawas/Stark CO., Ohio, Overholser (Overholt) family from PA to Holmes CO. I am aware of several Slife/Slifer families in the Sugar Creek Tuscarawas area. What I do not have is where this letter was written from or where it was sent. Most likely one of the places was near Wilmot Stark County Ohio. I have been unable to locate my Lawyer family in the Sugar Creek area in the 1850 census. Possable they were nearby in Wayne, Tuscarawas or Holmes County. Possaable my Lawyer family arrived in the area with your Slifer family. I tend to think that came from PA rather then directly from Germany as this letter is written in perfect English. Please feel free to contact me. Wes Hart Notify Administrator about this message?
