John Thompson-Hiley Dorland-Delaware>New Jersey>Ohio
Posted by: Terry Thompson (ID *****4118) Date: October 22, 2004 at 06:16:40
  of 1002

John Thompson married Hiley (Harriet, Hyltje) Dorland around 1798. John was born August 27, 1771, most likely in New Castle or Willmington, Delaware. Hiley was born in 1778. She was the daughter of Luke (Lucas) Dorland (Dorlandt, Dorling)and Eleanora Aulche. Luke Dorland is the son of Gerret Dorland and Hilitie Van Arsdalen (Arsdale). The Dorlands and Van Arsdalens are well-documented early residents of the Somerset, Harlingen New Jersey area. They had a strong Dutch background and were most likely part of the Dutch Reformed Church.

Later, while living in Columbiana County, Ohio, John Thompson receives U.S. Land Grant 5/11/1815, S.E. Corner, Section 17, Salt Creek TWP, Wayne County Ohio, signed by James Madison. John and Hiley Thompson along with John’s brother James Thompson (also of Delaware) and his wife Mary, move to Wayne County Ohio around 1815 along with the first several of John & Hileys’ 12 children. They remain there the rest of their lives. John, Hiley, James and many of their descendants are buried on “Thompson Hill” in the Thompson Cemetery just 2 miles East of current day Fredericksburg, Ohio. John was most likely a veteran of the War of 1812 and his son John Thompson, Jr. (buried in East Fredericksburg Cemetery) served in the Mexican War.

The 12 children of John and Hiley Thompson were Sarah, William, Elizabeth, Hannah, James, Mary, Sarah Anna, Reason, John William Jr., Joseph, Harriet and Eleanor.

I am trying to find the parents and exact origins of the patriarchs, John and James Thompson of Delaware>Ohio and a record of Hiley Dorland’s birth and marriage. PLEASE contact me with any information leads or requests about these pioneers.
