Johnstons: suicide by hanging/suicide by drowning
Posted by: Jo Ellen Fuller (ID *****5415) Date: June 05, 2013 at 00:05:35

I found out my great grandfather (James Johnston, 1827-1886 last of Grand View, Washington Co., Ohio) successfully hung himself from a cherry tree branch according to articles in The Marietta Weekly Leader and The Marietta Times. My interest lies in a line in my great grandfather's obit: "His daughter is now in the Asylum, and his mother suicided by drowning a few years ago."

Not exactly a glorious linage but in genealogy, one takes the good, the bad, and the ugly! Seems like such an act of my gg grandmother might have made a snippet in the newspapers of the times. Her name was Margaret Johnston, spouse of William Johnston. William and Margaret were both born in Ireland and landed in Ohio (first Jefferson Co., and then in Liberty Township, Washington Co. Margaret Johnston appeared in the 1860 census and her husband William Johnston remarried in Sept., 1867 so I presume Margaret Johnston drowned herself sometime from 1860 to Sept., 1867.

If anyone knows about Margaret Johnston's death or the county in Ireland that William and Margaret Johnston came from, please let me know.
Thank you. JO Ellen Johnston Fuller
