Thomas R. Pearce, (T.R.Pierce) Civil War Veteran,death 1878?

Here's hoping someone has access to information concerning the location and circumstances of my gggrandfather, Thomas's death. He lived with his family in Washington Co. during the mid 1800's. Some Pearce family members have information to the effect that he may have died in 1878 as the result of an accidental gunshot wound at the hands of a son-in-law while he was sitting on a wagon. He is buried in Tunnel cemetery under the name T.R. Pierce. Is there posssibly a source that might be able to provide additional information to substantiate this story concerning his death, including when and where he actually died?
