Researching my Martin family from about 1814 in Jackson/Scioto/Vinton County Ohio; I can provide the following information.
David Demetrius Martin born October 23, 1828 in Scioto County, (next to Jackson) Ohio and married March 18, 1852 in Tipton County, Indiana to Mary Ann Harbaugh; born 1832 in Brown County, Ohio were my Great-Great Grandparents.
David is the son of Jesse Martin and Margaret (Mary) Ann Bowen (Bowers) married November 04, 1814 in Scioto County Ohio. The area in Scioto County where they were living later became part of Jackson County, Ohio. In 1850; Vinton County, Ohio was formed in part from Jackson County.
The parents of Jesse Martin were William Martin and Elizabeth (Eliza) Patrick; married Oct 02 1788 in Greenbrier County (W) Virginia by Baptist Minister John Alderson.
The parents of Mary Ann Harbaugh were Samuel Harbough, wagon maker and served in the Blackhawk War; born July 25, 1808 in Kentucky; married August 08, 1843; probably in Indiana to Amelia Seaman. They migrated from Indiana to Nebraska.
Info posted on Ancestry.com states the following:
According to the "Biographical Souvenir of the counties of buffalo, Kearney, and Phelps, Nebraska", published by F. A. Battey & Company, Chicago 1890, Brinton F. Harbaugh was born in Hamilton County, Ind, of Samuel and Amelia (Seaman) Harbaugh. His father [Samuel] was born in Kentucky in 1808, but was reared in Ohio. In 1833 he [Samuel] moved to Indiana and in 1875 came to Nebraska. He [Samuel] was a wagon-maker by trade and was a soldier in the Black Hawk war. He has several times been elected justice of the peace and is a respected member of the Christian Church").
The information I had showed him dying in 1877, but I found Samuel & Amelia and son on the 1880 census for Nebraska. With further research, I found Samuel & Amelia buried in the Armada-Miller Cemetery.
The gravesite transcription shows: Harbaugh, Samuel, 1808 - 1891,
Nancy Irene, "Dau. Of B.F. & J.V. Harbaugh", 1890-1906
The parents of Samuel Harbaugh were Phillip Harbaugh and Jane Pickerill married 1804 in Mason County, Kentucky.
Phillip; According to family legend, came to America about 1775 and settled in Shenandoah County, Virginia. No document could be found to this effect, and all the counties were searched, where the traditions centered.
--Harbaugh History, by Cora Bell Harbaugh Cooprider, 1947, p. 15
According to family legend, this man was an immigrant from Europe about 1775, he being born on the ocean. According to a descendant, Mrs. Gertrude Lingle, three brothers came to this country and settled in New York and Maryland. Then they moved south. They had three sisters, who married Mr. Richey, Mr. Muller and Mr. Steffinger. In his auto-biography, Jasper James Harbaugh, wrote in 1925 that his great grandfather was born in Virginia. The only known child of this Philip was a son Philip, who married Jane Pickerill.
--Harbaugh History, by Cora Bell Harbaugh Cooprider, 1947, p. 332
Jane Pickerill was a daughter of Samuel Pickerill JR (a Private and Drummer that severed from Virginia in the Revolution) and Mary Lowe of Prince George County, Maryland. Samuel received and lived on land in Brown County; Ohio for his service during the war.
Mary Ann Harbaugh died 1869 in Tipton County Indiana.
David Demetrius Martin remarried Susan A. Houdasheldt April 09, 1870 in Tipton Indiana.
The parents of Susan were Absalom Houdasheldt and Melinda Stroud married March 21, 1838 in Jackson County, Ohio.
Part of My Martin family migrated from Scioto/Jackson/Vinton County Ohio to Tipton Indiana about 1842 while some of my other Martins migrated to Jasper County. Illinois.
After the death of Davidís wife; Susan, David relocated also to Jasper County, Illinois.
David died April 07, 1894 in Newton, Illinois and is laid to rest in the Trexler ďAKA Kedron, Toland GroveĒ Cemetery Jasper CO IL.
I believe my Martin families in Jackson/Vinton County, Ohio were members of The Christian Church as was Elder Joseph Arbaugh that preformed many early marriages in the area during the 1830s-1840s time spans.
I also believe that Arbaugh and Harbaugh are most likely the same family.
Besides the names I have mentioned; some of my surnames for my Martin family in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois include Spriggs, Throckmorton, Mercer, White, Johnson, Fleming, Gilliland, Trexler, Boster, Ward, Foster, French, Whitehurst, Dever, Toland and Burnside.
I am looking for the parents and or siblings of Margaret (Mary) Ann Bowen (Bowers) and indications are that they were likely from Virginia or PA and descendants were in Vinton or Jackson County. Ohio.
If anyone would like more information or has any to share regarding anything I have said please post a follow-up or contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
I hope this helps someone.
