Jacob Collins had four sons: George, born in 1873 (died before 1880); John F, born in 1875; Mont, born in 1882; and Clarence, born in 1884. One of Jacob's nephews, William J, was my husband's grandfather, but he was definitely not the one you are looking for because he was born in 1868 and died in 1938. If your William Collins was born in 1873, he was about 7 years old when the 1880 Census was taken. In Vinton County, the Census shows a William Collins who was 10 and another one who was 4. Other 7 year old boys named William Collins lived in Ashtabula, Union, and Cuyahoga counties in 1880. (I only looked in Ohio; his family may have been living in another state at that time).
If you know the date and place when your William died, you can request a copy of his death certificate. It should have the names of his parents. If you can also find his obituary, it may have the names of his siblings.
Let me know if I can do anything else to help you with your research.
