My grandfather Benjamin Sowders/Souders was according to census records born in Ohio Oct 3 possibly 1838. He served in the civil war in the 80th Ohio. He married Lucretia Koontz in Stark Co, Ohio April 19, 1864. Benjamin and Lucretia had nine known children: James A. 1865, William H. 1866, Harvey B. 1868, Mary 1869, John Eakin 1870, Emerson 1871, Benjamin Franklin, Edward Charles 1879 and Lucy
I was told by a great uncle's descendents that the family may have originally been from the area of Souderton, PA. They lived in Stark and Tuscarawus County Ohio before my grandfather John Sowders was born in 1870. My grandfather John Sowders/Souders was indicated to have been born in Illinois. They must have moved back and forth some because later children were born in Ohio again. I have been unable to pinpoint many relationships earlier than 1860 because the census doesn't list all the family member names and these names are very common. My family spells the name both Souders and Sowders. Let me know if you find any additional information.
