Civil War information/help

My Descendent is buried in New Philadelphia, Fair St. He has a civil war stone and a star shaped momument that says Army of the Republic 1861-Veteran-1866. What does that mean? The cemetery records says he was in company D 52nd but I can't find any record of him in that company and I filed for a pension file from NARA but they couldn't find a record for him? I found a William F. Carson in Company B in the 52nd so I requested that Pension record, thinking he could be a relative, he was in that company and died in Tenn, it is well documented and they couldn't find a record for him, how can that be? How can I find my Robert and for that matter William Carson's?
