EMMA A. (BERGQUIST?) & CHARLES E. BROWN - Warren, Trumbull Co., OH
Posted by: Lynne Howell (ID *****2851) Date: April 24, 2008 at 16:23:39
  of 1001

I am searching for information regarding the above-mentioned couple. I believe they resided in Warren, Trumbull Co., OH.

I believe Emma A. Brown to be Emma Alvern Bergquist, d/o of August and Palma Bergquist. Emma A. Bergquist was b. abt. 1901 in McCalmont Twp., Jefferson Co., PA. She is found in the 1910 and 1920 Federal Censuses for McCalmont Twp., Jefferson Co., PA, living in the home of her parents. Emma A. Bergquist had three half-siblings: Ellen Larson; Charles Larson; and Leonard Larson (Bergquist). She also had siblings: Walter, b. abt. 1903; Bernard, b. abt. 1905; Arnold, b. abt. 1907; and Gilbert b. abt. 1914 (there may have been others). All children were b. in PA (presumably McCalmont Twp., Jefferson Co., PA). I have a photocopy of a wedding announcement sent from her parents to my g-grandfather; it states that she and her new husband will be setting up housekeeping in Youngstown, OH. Emma's parents and several of her siblings can be found in the 1930 Federal Census for Youngstown, Mahoning Co., OH.

I believe that Emma A. Bergquist is Emma A. Brown, b. 10 Mar 1901 in PA; d. 29 Dec 1980 in the Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Trumbull Co., OH. Her husband, Charles E. Brown, was b. 26 Aug 1900 in IN and d. 23 May 1994 at home in Warren, Trumbull Co., OH. Mr. Brown's mother was a Ms. Thomas, b. in PA, and his father, Mr. Brown was b. in IN. He was a salesman of heavy equipment. According to the 1930 Federal Census for Warren, Trumbull Co., OH, Charles and Emma had one child, Charles, age 4 & 4/12, b. OH.

Emma Alvern Bergquist Brown is my g-grandfather's niece. My family knows very little about Uncle August's family.

August Bergquist was b. Nov 1863 or 1866 (probably in Brålanda, Älvsborgs län, Dalsland, Sweden). His birth surname was Andersson, but he and my g-grandfather, John, changed the family surname sometime about 1890. August first lived in Arnot, Tioga Co., PA, and was a miner while living there (as was his brother).

August's brother, Johan (John) Andersson Bergquist was b. 24 Aug 1860 in Brålanda, Älvsborgs län, Dalsland, Sweden. John emigrated to America in 1882. I believe that August emigrated abt. 1887.

August m. abt. 1900 the widow, Palma (Petersen?) Larson. She was b. Dec 1873 in Norway. She states in the 1900 Federal Census that she emigrated to America in 1890. Her 1st husband (Christian name unknown) Larson was also from Norway. She ran a boardinghouse after his death, and August was one of her boarders. They can be found in the 1900 Federal Census for McCalmont Twp., Jefferson Co., PA. They were not married when the census was taken.

August's and John's parents may be Anders Johansson and Anna "Casja" Magnusdötter (I do not have confirmation of this as of yet). They may also have had a sister, Augusta, b. in 1856.

Please contact me if you have any information regarding Emma A. Brown. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lynne Bergquist Howell

P.S. Other spellings I have found for the name Bergquist include: Berquist, Burgquist, Burquist, Burkqust, Burkquest, Bigquist and Burggust. Her siblings may have used any one of these alternate spellings.
