Family History - Written by Joel McCollum

My great-grandfather McCollum’s name was John. My grand father McCollum’s name was David. The brothers of my grandfather McCollum were John, David, Duncan & Malachi.

My great grandfather McCollum was a remarkably sprightly man. He was very wealthy. In some of the Historie of Scotland the McCollums are described as a “clan.” The Campbells were described as another clan. My great grand father left Scotland & was one of the very early settlers of New Jersey. His first place of settlement in N.J. was in Somerset Co. He came from Scotland without his family & the vessel in which he came was cast away on the Jersey shore. In due time he sent for his family & settled & remained with them until his death in said state of New Jersey. Neither he nor any of his posterity ever returned to Scotland so far as is known, or made any efficient or successful effort to obtain the property left. He died at the age of 103 years & was buried in the grave yard at Basking Ridge, N.J.

The McCollum family are said to have been of the Scotch Presbyterian order. The name was sometimes called Malcolm & I understand as lately as 1841 one of the descendents, Neal Malcolm (son of Geo. McCollum (Malcolm)) a very wealthy man spent a part of his time in London; that his place of residence – post office address was at Potalluck of Argyleshire North Britain.

A place called Cobin [Corran, originally Corbarron, in Parish of Craignish - suggestion of Murdo MacDonald, Archivist of Argyll & Bute Council] I understand to have been the ancient seat of the McCollums. Two brothers – Malcolm McCollum & Archy McCollum I understand live about 50 miles above Montreal scenery of Archargy, St. Andrews. These men are family connections of the aforesaid Neil Malcolm. John &: Duncan McCollum, aged men, I understand are also connections of said Neil Malcolm. They reside in Talbot Settlement, on Talbot Street farms Upper Canada.

My grandmother (on my father’s side) maiden name was Mary Henry. She had two brothers Robert & John. My great grandfather Henry was buried in the grave yard at Baskingridge & died at the advanced age of 107 years.

The names of my uncles on my father’s; side were James, David, Daniel, & John. James moved to South Carolina soon after the Revolutionary war. He had one child, a son. David & Daniel were in the battle of Long Island. Daniel was killed in that battle as supposed. He was seen actively engaged in the fight, but was not seen afterward. David escaped with others to Staten Island. He married Lucy Cook of Mendam [Mendham, Morris Co.] N.J. They had two sons Samuel & Asa. The family as I learn removed to Ohio in an early day. John McCollum removed to Ohio when the country was new & settled in Trumball county where he remarried & he & his wife both died in 1849. I visited them in 1847 & several of their sons living near. My grandfather David McCollum & his wife died many years since. They lived with my uncle John during the latter years of their lifes.

My father had five sisters to wit – Nancy, Polly, Susan, Betsey & Margaret. Nancy married a man by the name of McVickar & removed to the glades of the Allegany Mts. Polly died when young. Ann married a man by the name of Ruple. He was a widower at the time & had four children. Two of this number, Samuel & John Ruple live in Euclid Ohio.

Betsey married a man by the name of David Post. They both died in the state of Ohio.

Margaret was married to Joseph Johnson. My uncle & aunt Johnson lived for a time in Charlton Saratoga Co, N.Y. but the latter part of their lives they lived in Palmyra Wayne Co. N.Y. ; I was well acquainted with this family. They had seven children, six of whom are still living, to wit – David, Daniel, Joseph, Ann, Margaret & Betsey. Polly; is dead. My uncle died some twenty years since, my aunt Margaret died in 1847. It is believed that all of my father’s brothers & sisters are now dead.

Death: 18 APR 1760 in Basking Ridge, Somerset, NJ, USA 1
Immigration: BET SEP AND DEC 1685 Sailed on the "Henry and Francis" of New Castle from Leith, Scotland to Perth Amboy, NJ. 1
Note:
His self-composed epitaph reads: "You old, you young, you middle aged, great and small, take my advice, be ready for death's call. I once was young and many days did see, I dyd when old, no age from death being free. I'm now twom'd; in earths' dark cavern lye, conquered by death. Make ready all to dye."

Per historian David Dobsen: A Scottish Privy Council Document Saying "The Covenanter John McCollum is Banish/Exiled to one of the King's Plantations."

Per Ralph McCollum via email Sep 22 2005:
Scottish Privy Council records show that John McCollum was sentenced on July 31, 1685 to be banished to the King's plantations abroad for supporting the Duke of Argyll in a rebellion and David Dobsen's research into Scottish immigrants to America states that he was transported as a Covenanter aboard the Henry and Francis between September and December 1685 to Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Dobsen also says he spent time at the Canongate Tollbooth Prison before his transport. Other sources say he was kept at Paul's Work in Edinburgh. I knew that his signature was not among those of the passengers who signed an oath, but they were paying passengers gathered by a religious group. The prisoners were not among the group and it was expected by the master of the ship, I believe his name was Richard Hutton, that he could sell them into indentured servitude to recoup some of his expenses. He had planned to take them to Jamaica where he could get a higher price, but ended up in New Jersey for a number of reasons including weather and the desire of the paying passengers. I think the orginal number of passengers, including prisoners, was about 130. That leaves about 30 unaccounted for who didn't sign the oath. What I can't say for certain is that this John McCollum and "Old John" are the same person, but Dobsen placed the Covenanter John's birth at about 1650 and Old John was born about 1657 or 58.
