Information by Theresa Trucksis Hickey---Emerson was born on January 6, 1830 on his parent's farm in Hubbard Twp. His family relocated to NW Ohio when he was a child but when he was 17, he returned to the area to live with a married sister in Trumbull Co. In 1857, he married the youngest daughter of Benjamin Stevens, an early settler of Warren and settled there. When in 1861 Lincoln called for volunteers for the War of Secession, Opdycke answered with patriotic enthusiasm. He enlisted as a private soldier but was soon commissioned as Capt. of "A" Co. in the 41st Ohio. He later took command on a new regiment, the 125th and was mustered in as Colonel. Following many impressive battle victories, he was promoted to Lt. Colonel and finally to Brigadier General in July, 1865. Ironically, on April 22, 1895, while cleaning a pistol, the weapon accidently discharged and struck him in the abdomen. He died 3 days later of peritonitis. Brigadier General Emerson Opdycke is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren, Ohio. (Trumbull County) Hope this helps someone.
