Ralph:
Once again - thank you for your research. It is interesting how new, helpful information also leads to more questions. Yes I have a map of Trumbull County. I was in Trumbull Cty.in 1982 and again in the early 1990's. I have completed a considerable amount of research in the county - but largely in Greene Twp. My problem is that I have not properly cleared up the information about the offspring of Aaron Rice Jr. & Submit (Jones).
In 1982 I was in the Old Kenilworth Cemetery and I have a list of the names on markers, from that cemetery, that researchers have identified. In my notes I see that in 1982 I found Aaron Rice Jr's marker;(died June 9, 1866 at age 84 yrs) but for what ever reason I did not find Submit (Jones)Rice's marker(died Dec. 19, 1835 at age 50)
That is interesting that Robert W. Crane, the clergyman, was in Hartford Twp., in 1860 but no wife was listed. I have to believe the census taker made a major mistake. The age of 44 would be pertinent for the wife Submit; but how he would enter Tuburet - a male - is bizarre. Also that Submit died in Fredonia, NY in 1862 is interesting. In 1982 I met a lady by the name of Mary Case Hoskins who wrote a history of Greene Twp. in 1976. I corresponded with Mary right up until just before she died in 1997 at age 99 years. In her book she has a list of 72 men who served during the Civil War. It was not an official list; it was based on the memory of some persons and what she could find in previous written histories of Greene. And she states in the book that there were about 100 men from the township that served.
Something I had not noted before, Mary Hoskins lists R.W. Crane as one of the men who served. So that may account for his wife not being in Trumbull Cty. when she died in 1862. As I have said previously, I do not know when the Rice family came into Greene Twp. but it may not have been until 1829; coming from New York state. (It is written that the widower Aaron Rice Sr. came from New York in 1829; that may have been when Jr. and his family came to Greene.) If that was the case, then Submit could well have had relatives &/or friends back in New York state whom she might visit in 1862.
Submit (Rice) Crane's mother, the former Submit Jones, was the daughter of Isaac & Abigail (Brockway) Jones. Isaac Jones, living in Conn., along with some other men, explored what became Harford Township in Trumbull Cty. in 1799 and he apparently moved his family to Hartford that year. There were several families that were related to Isaac and his wife that were living in Hartford Twp. in the 1800's. So Submit(Rice)Crane, if she did live for a period of time in Hartford Twp., would have been living amongst relatives on her mother's side.
(As I have stated previously,Aaron Rice Jr. & his wife Submit had a daughter named Sally b.1815. Sally and her sister Submit b. 1816 - the wife of R. W. Crane - were only 1 year apart in age. According to the Jones family history book, Isaac & Abigail Jones had a daughter born in 1789 whom they named Sally; she lived 6 days. The next girl - born in 1797 - was named Sally. She died on Dec. 25, 1801 of smallpox and she was the first death recorded in Hartford Twp. The next girl born to the couple was born in 1809 and she was given the name Sally. That lady lived until 1889. This then is why Aaron Rice Jr. and his wife Submit Jones (b.1785)gave a daughter the name Sally.)
That is intriguing that the Crane's son Stephen died in 1863. He is not listed in the Greene Twp. history book as one who served during the Civil War but, as I said, this is a incomplete, unofficial listing. I know there is a lady who trying to accumulate the names of all of the persons who served during the Civil War that were from Trumbull Cty.
Thanks again.....I greatly apprciate your help. You have provided some very helpful information.
