So now. Two questions. 1. Why no 1860 census?
2. Does anyone connect to any of these Chapmans back to about 1860? I am looking for grandpa Allen Bertram "Bert" CHAPMAN, born about 1860. Who was in those people's houses those years?
Somewhere around late 1870s he attended WESTERN RESERVE ACADEMY in HUDSON. Now, I've been reading a whole lot of STARK County (CANTON) 1850 census that I've been able to get at, and have seen a total of ONE student in a household, his or anyone else's. I don't yet have access to SUMMIT County censuses. (Censi?) (Stark, because that's where I next found Bert, in Canton.) WRA first opened in 1826.
Males from the age of 15 are put to work at their place or a neighbor's who has no strong young man to work yet, OR apprenticed to trades up to about age 21 when they are freed. (From about 14 daughters are farmed out as mothers' helpers, too.) All this is approximately for room and board. Talk about workfare!
