Thank you for answering,JoEllen. William, in that census (1870) is my great-grandfather and Mary Ann, his mother, is my gr-gr-grandmother. I found a James Crain, 25, as a boarder in the 1860 census, but I don't know if they are connected. I'll check the 1870 census again to see if I can find the James, 21, you mention. (sometimes they don't write down the correct age.) Barb
