I am looking for information on Christopher “Chris” (middle initial “B” or “G”) Young who was a river boat captain and lived in Portsmouth.
From Ohio Deaths and Burials 1854-1997 at www.familysearch.org, I find he was born in Portsmouth in 1841 and died there on 16 April 1897. The source says he was married and was a river boat captain.
I have found what appears to be him in the 1860 census in the household of Louis and Adeline Young in Portsmouth.
Christopher Young married Mary Elizabeth Clark on 19 November 1867 in Belmont County, OH. Mary Elizabeth was born about 1840 in West Virginia (likely in Wheeling) and was a daughter of William Clark, a steamboat captain who lived in Wheeling and later right across the river in Belmont County, OH. Mary Elizabeth had a brother, James B. Clark, who was living with her and Chris Young in Portsmouth in the 1870 census. James B. Clark moved to Washington, D.C. by 1900.
Chris B. and Elizabeth were living at Portsmouth in 1870 – at that time he was a steamboat clerk.
I have not been able to find them in the 1880 census.
Chris died 16 April 1897 and Mary Elizabeth 22 April 1925 in Portsmouth. I have found her in Portsmouth in the 1900, 1910 & 1920 censuses as a widow.
Any information on these people would be appreciated. My connection to this family is through Mary Elizabeth Clark.
