Hello. I am looking for info. regarding a James BROWN who was b. ca. 1822 Stark Co. OH. I "believe" this man was the second husband of my GGGrandmother Rebecca LLOYD ALEXANDER b. ca. 1821 VA, poss. d. ca. 1860/62 Wayne Co. IL. In 1859 Gma. Rebecca re-married to a James BROWN (Wayne Co. Newspaper Gleanings). In the 1860 Wayne Co. Census, Gma. Rebecca, age 39,is shown in the household of a James BROWN age shown as 38, b. OH. (b. ca. 1822) Also in the James BROWN household are Gma. Rebecca's children from her first marriage to Phillip ALEXANDER b. ca. 1820 OH d. 1856 Wayne Co. IL. Their children are: Elizabeth A., 17 b. OH, Calvin (C), 16 b. OH, Mary J. (Jane), 8 b. OH, Elmira, 8 b. IL (My Great Grandmother) Also there is a son Horace BROWN 7m b. IL. By 1870 this BROWN household has disappeared. However, in the Peter BEAMER/BEEMER household are Horace BROWN age 10 and Hulda BROWN age 6, giving her a birthdate ca. 1866. Both were b. in IL. GGma. Elmira is living with her Uncle N.C. and Aunt Jane Cecelia AUSTIN ALEXANDER.
In 1862 a James BROWN of Wayne Co. IL enlisted in the 56th IL INF. Company H. He states he is single (widower). If this is the James BROWN who m. Rebecca LLOYD ALEXANDER and she died before 1866 when Hulda BROWN was b., who is Hulda's mother? When did Rebecca d. and where is she buried?
In ca. 1879 James BROWN b. ca. 1822 OH re-married to a Sadie (Petty) Moreland. They had one son Grant.
In the 1880 Census a James BROWN is shown as head of household age 60 b. OH making him b. ca. 1820 OH. In this case, I'm not sure of the accuracy of his age, or if this is the same James BROWN b. ca. 1822 OH, but it is very likely. In his household are his wife Martha (?) 46 b. TN, Ulysses G. (Grant?) 9 b. IL. Mattie MORELAND SDau. 17 b. IL, Addie HARPER 19 b. KY and Anna HARPER 26 b. KY.
In 1895 a James BROWN d. and was buried in Buckeye Cemetery, Wayne Co. IL, however the stone shows he was in Co. G. James BROWN did re-enlist in the Union Army when his first tour of duty ended, so this is prob. the same James BROWN of 1862. I have a copy of his enlistment papers showing Co. H, but haven't found Co. G as yet.
Sorry to bore everyone with details, but then one of those details just might ring a bell with someone.
