Okay, a little bit dramatic with the opening, but basically that is what it looks like. I am trying to help Connie Cooper-Szymczak (on GenForum/Cooper)locate her Cooper Ancestors in Ohio. In the 1860 census, John Cooper is aged 25 and born in Massachusetts. His wife, Mary (Morgan) is remarried to William Brown in 1870 and the Cooper children are living with them. John probably died in the Civil War. Connie is trying to follow up on that. I am trying to find him when he was younger. There are no obvious matches, but the 15 year old John Cooper, son of William & Patty Cooper in Madison, Ohio in the 1850 census look like a good lead. The mother, Patty was born in Massachusetts. If his parents died when he was young, that would account for the confusion in subsequent census records as to where he was born. I can't find William or Patty or his brother Edgar anywhere in the 1860 census (yes, I have used all types of combinations of ages, birthplaces, firstnames, etc. to try to find mis-indexed info) Nobody else seems to have ever researched this family, so I thought we might have better luck trying to find someone who knows the available records for that area. The census and IGI just aren't enough. Does anyone know of any records available for Madison (vital records?) or Richville County (cemetery records, guaurdianship records, etc.) that might be able to shed some light on this theory? There was a 10 year old Endors/Eudora Cooper with them in 1860. John & Mary would have been 15 when she was born. Perhaps she was a younger sister to John and she also survived whatever disaster befell the parents and Edgar (speaking strictly theory here) Here is some census information that led to this theory.
