Excerpted from:

....."John Porter was born in Virginia, October 15, 1799, and removed with his father's* family to Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, in 1810. In 1824 he removed to Vermillion township, now Ashland county [ Ohio ]. He located near what is known as Smith's mill, near Beall's trail and camping ground.
His brother DANIEL [ Porter ] and several acquaintances had been in Beall's expedition in 1812 [ War of 1812 ], and finally located in the same neighborhood.

Mr. Porter's neighbors were John Johnston, Thomas Roe, Uriah Johnston, George Eckley, Eli Finley, George Keene, Isaac Vail, Robert Finley, Lemuel Bolter, and John Farmer, and shortly afterwards Isaac Paulin.

.....Mr. John Porter improved his farm and resided on it until January 20, 1860, when he deceased. His widow still survives. His sons are David, deceased; William O., and Daniel.

.....William O. Porter has filled a number of township offices, and been sheriff four years. He possesses a good education, and has recently studied law, and been admitted. He resides on the old homestead."

The Porters, Gaffneys & Finleys were a close-knit clan.
Their families intermarried, and often settled near one another in various parts of the country -- including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, etc.

Many of these families settled in Ashland County, Ohio; Richland/Vermillion, OH; and, some of them later re-located to the Stark County, Illinois area.
In addition to the above-referenced individuals, a few of the OTHER family members who also settled in Ashland County, Ohio were Amy PORTER Fenton, and husband John Fenton; Elizabeth PORTER Sparks, and husband Elijah Sparks; Catherine GAFFNEY Porter (wife of Daniel Porter), and children.
Christian Gingrich Sr. & family, etc., etc., etc.
(Lucinda PORTER Gingrich was the wife of Daniel Gingrich, of Stark County, Illinois).
