I was just glancing through the older messages when I came upon this one. I have made copies of Civil War Vets' photos from the Camden area that have been archived in the Camden Archives at the Camden Branch Library. I felt so sorry for those men whom no one seemed to know anything about that I began collecting information so that I could hopefully publish a book. I happen to have a photo of Sidney and one of his brother, Thomas Sr. I don't have much more information on his since I am really just beginning. If you would like to have a copy, just e-mail me with your address. I will send you one.

What I do know is:
He married Charlotte A. Myler Feb. 11, 1858 in Preble County, by Peter Banta, M.G.

He served in the Civil War in Co. B, 54th OVI from Feb 20, 1864-Feb 2 1865. He was wounded 5-15-64. He served 1 year and 1 day. He was a private and 30 years old when he entered. He was to be in for 3 years. He was discharged on Feb 21, 1865 at Camp Dennison on a surgeon's certificate of disability.

In 1890, he was in the special census in Gasper Township. He had a Camden mailing address. He reported he was wounded in the left knee.

In "Preble County in the Civil War" by Audrey Gilbert, "May 22, 1864 - Bivouac near Kingston,GA, 54th OVI".."wounded: Sidney Hewitt, Co.B. in the left leg May 15..."

Also in the above book, "Sept. 15, 1864...We welcome home more of our wounded boys. Sidney Hewitt of Camden who was severely wounded at Resaca...Sidney belongs to the 54th and the other two (other two men who were previously mentioned but I didn't note here) to the 81st."

Sidney is listed as a Camden resident owning property in Gasper Twp. in the Preble County Directory for 1875.

If you would like a copy of the photo, send me your address. I need to get the originals and make better copies anyway. I can send a black and white photocopy very easily, but would like to send a copy on thicker paper from the color copier. Just let me know. Also, if you have anything to add on his life, I would like to know so I can include the information in my book. Debbie
