Thank you again, Mr. Hart. That nails it.

In 1900 Deliliah told the census enumerator she was born in April 1856. Her census records from 1860 to 1920 all argue for 1856, but she could have been consistently inaccurate, especially after she married David.

Here she is in 1900:

1900 (Eaton, Preble, Ohio)

David A Shearer, 45, head, May 1855, Oh, Oh, Oh, hardware clerk
Delliah Shearer, 44, wife, Apr 1856, Ind, Oh, Oh
Minnie A Shearer, 16, dau, Aug 1883, dressmaker, Oh, Ind
Mary E Shearer, 12, dau, Apr 1888, at school, Oh, Ind
Martha L Shearer, 4, dau, July 1895, Oh, Oh

Martha has "Oh" for her mother's birthplace, but on Martha's 1914 marriage licence application with John C. Campbell (courtesy of the Preble Co. Library web site) she says her parents are Andrew Scherer and Deliliah Young.
