Robert Harrison of Gapser Township, Preble County, OH
Posted by: Dr. Stephen Berrey (ID *****9534) Date: September 16, 2005 at 20:28:13
  of 1623

I am seeking proof indicating that "Robert Harrison" (my paternal 3rd great-grandfather) was the son of "Hudson & Rachel (Beeson) Harrison"- both born in Randolph County, North Carolina. Robert was born on 26 January 1823, Gasper Township, Preble County, Ohio.

The date of birth for Robert has been proven in two sources:

(1) Civil War veterans file, NARA I, Wash DC
(2) obituary in the "Augusta Daily Gazette" (18 February 1898).

The obit mentioned that:
"John Harrison of Franklin County, Kansas, came in Monday aboard a train entering Augusta Town, and attended the funeral of his brother- Robert Harrison."

There were only two John Harrison names in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census of Franklin County, Kansas- one of them being Robert's brother. To determine which was the brother, the following analysis was conducted:

FIRST ANALYSIS: According to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census of Franklin Township, Franklin County, Kansas (11 June 1900, page # 148B, lines # 91 - 92), "John K. Harrison & wife Mrs. Sarah D. (Burns) Harrison" resided on their own farmland. John gave his birth place as Ohio, and the birth place of both parents as: North Carolina.

SECOND ANALYSIS: The only other "John Harrison" of Franklin County, Kansas, during the same census year of 1900 was a "John H. Harrison". According to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census of Ward 2, Ottawa Township, Franklin County, Kansas (12 June 1900, page # 241A, lines # 13 - 14), "Honorable John H. Harrison & Mrs. Martha E. (Lamb) Harrison" was a probate judge whose place of birth was the same as his parents: Indiana. Honorable Judge John H. Harrison was the son of Robert & Mrs. Mary "Polly" (Hammer) Harrison- both who were actually born in Randolph County, North Carolina.

CONCLUSION: It is my own conclusion, based upon the known facts provided in the two analysis that the "John K. Harrison" is the actual brother of Robert Harrison- the same John Harrison who attended Robert's funeral, and that John and Robert were the sons of Hudson & Rachel Harrison.

The only reference source I believe that may help me would be obtaining a copy of the Monthly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Preble County, Ohio.

The reference source: "Genealogical Society of America: Volume V, Ohio"; provided a listing of marriages, births, deaths, certificates, disownments, etc., and much collateral information of interest to genealogy, history, biology, and social conditions.

From the above source, the "Elk Meeting" and "Westfield Meeting" were documented.

Who do I contact to have the Monthly Meeting minutes reviewed (Elk and Westfield)?

Thank you for your assistance!
