Silar McKee (age 23 in 1850 Census)
Interested in finding family members Silas McKee.His parents, Alexander and Rhoda McKee, had children named William, Silas, Thomas, John, Price, and Margaret.
Silas is my grandmother's grandfather.Story is that, as a young man, he went to New York, boarded a ship to the Isthmus of Panama, walked across it, and then took a ship to California and the gold fields in the 1849 Gold Rush.He got enough gold to make a ring (it is still in the family; my cousin's granddaughter has it).He then rode a mule back to Ohio along the Oregon Trail. Some in the genealogy business have told me that he probably did not make that journey alone.Chances are a group of young men did it together.Interested in any information about this family and information to confirm his adventure to California.
