Washington Co., PA - NEED EVERYONE'S HELP
While researching my brickwall, it has become apparent that many of the earlier settlers to both Knox Co and Morrow Co came from PA and specifically, quite a few came from Washington Co., PA.
I have often found that by studying other families that appeared to move with my family - whether I knew they were related or not - I was able to make new connections and find additional info to further my search.
To that end...
Many of you have posted queries about ancestors that came to Ohio from Washington Co., PA by the 1830s (e.g., Cook, Hobbs, McCracken, Elliott, Harriman, Cochran, Sherer, Kinkaid, Ely, Keller).
Several of you have listed Knox Co. marriages occuring in 1830 (e.g., Sherer, Kincaid, Keller, Delano to name a few).
Can we start a thread, summarizing what we know, and see if any of it can lead us to solving our collective brickwalls?
Information that would be helpful...
when did your ancestor migrate to Ohio? was it direct from Washington Co., PA? what marriages occurred in Knox? to whom and when? were there siblings that remained behind or moved elsewhere?
what are some of the collateral family names? did they migrate together?
where exactly (twp) did they live in Knox Co, Ohio? do you know what cemetary they're buried in? what was their church affiliation? profession? political affiliation?
from where did the family originate? etc. - you get the idea.
Here's mine...JOHN KELLER born Nov 18, 1810/11 in Washington Co., PA. farmer. died in 1880 of stomach cancer. Parents and siblings are unknown, although some speculation that he may be connected to the Philip Keller family.
Date of migration unknown, but prior to 1830 (see marriage below). First found in 1850 census, South Bloomfield Twp., Morrow Co. Sparta area. Probably Swiss or German. Buried in what I believe is called the Hedding Cemetary off old Rt 229 (Sparta) near the Knox Co border.
Many of the related families were Methodist or Universalist and their politics varied; don't know re: John Keller but more recent generations were Methodist or Later generations were Adventist. Family tends to keep their politics to themselves but gets involved in their community - Masons, Lions Club, Grange, Farm Bureau, etc. One family speculates there may be a Quaker connection, but no proof.
John Keller married Mary A. Delano, Fredericktown, Knox Co., OH 1830. They had 11 children, 10 survived to adulthood; the majority remained in Knox and Morrow Co.
Collatoral surnames include BARR, BISHOP, BUTLER, CARSON, COTTON, DELANO, EVERTS, GROVES, HARRIS, HELT, INSCHO, JACKSON, JOHNSON, KEES, KESSLER, KEYS, LACY, LARISON, MARTIN, MILLER, PEARL, POYNTER, RIBLET, ROBERTSON, SHAFFER, SLACK, SPACKLEN, VAN HOUTON, maybe DUFFY, HULSE, REES, among many others
