Cowgill and multiple spellings!

My Cowgills are in Morgan Co., Ohio by the birth of Harriett 'Hattie' b/a/1806 Marion, Morgan Co., . This is from census.
She m/Benjamin HOOPER of Jefferson Co., Ohio. Supposedly his family were in Morgan Co., Ohio m/1828 and returned to Jefferson Co.
Her Parents were Elisha Cowgill and Sarah Miller.
Hints are that this couple (at least Sarah) were from Chester, PA.
In the 1820 census, I find an Elisha Cogel in Belmont Co., Colrain, Ohio.
Attempting to backtrack presents a real problem.
In 1810 I cannot find any of the many spellings in Ohio.
12 in VA. one in KY and one in MD.
Guess my question (one of many) is: Are most of these various spellings ONE family; or are there several??? With my father's surname there are nine thus far. Some match and overlap and others don't.
For my children's father's surname there have been 26 found.
Good thing that I love puzzles.
Any Assistance Appreciated
