Simon Elliott of Meigsville twp, Morgan CO, OH, will info

I finally sent off for the will of Simon Elliott of Meigsville twp, Morgan County, Ohio; and after reading it have concluded with both bad news and good. The bad news…the Mary Trevirne or Mary Levine that people were linking to him as his wife appears to have come from the will index for that county (there were two listings). When the will was enlarged the cursive word that follows Mary is not a name but “Survive”…”It is my will that Should my wife Mary Survive me that the home farm in which we now live Shall be left to her during her life….” All the S’s in the document are capitalized.

The good news is that I am now more certain that the parents of John Elliott of Waterloo Twp, Athens County, Ohio is this Simon and Mary Elliott.

Found in Waterloo twp in its infancy was Simon Elliott (Jr.) (who soon moved on), Ellen Elliott Boden, and Elizabeth Elliott Mayhugh; John followed some time after his marriage to Rachel Hanson on Dec 31, 1840…all married in Morgan County. The Hanson family and Rachel’s mother’s relatives (Israel) were at one time neighbors to Simon & Mary Elliott (Meigsville twp, Morgan County, OH).

The will of Simon Elliott (dated 30 May 1850): “…my Son John Elliott…my daughter Betsey Mayhew…my daughter Ellen Boden…my daughter Jane…my grand Children William and Thomas Elliott Sons of Thomas…my Son Simon….” (everyone is found in the census).

I know that naming patterns are no “proof” of anything, but they sometimes can serve as arrows…John & Rachel’s first child is named Simon Peter Elliott (Rachel’s father is named Peter).

The one thing that has me concerned is that the Mayhugh researchers say that family tradition has it that John & Elizabeth’s father’s name is John…however I get the impression that this info wasn’t 100%. If John & Elizabeth aren’t Simon’s children…then I think that they were “accepted” as his kids.

If anyone has any further thoughts on this, please let me know.

Thank you…Terry Liggett Elliott
