Jacob Newman PA/MD/OH
Many of Jacob's descendants, if not Jacob himself, lived in Morgan County in the early 1800's.
It is commonly reported - Newman GenForum, IGI, WorldConnect, etc - that a Jacob Newman married Mary Reed on the 19th of October, 1795, in Baltimore, MD.
It is also commonly reported that this Jacob is the father of George W (prob Washington) Newman, born in 1787 in Fredrick County, MD and Joseph A Newman, born the 10th of April, 1795, also in MD. George's birth is eight years *before* this reported marriage of his father to Mary Reed. There also are several younger siblings who are born after this marriage date.
It is also reported, although somewhat less commonly, that Mary A Helper/Helfer, daughter of George Helferich, born about 1770 in Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland County, PA married this same Jacob Newman on the 25th of May, 1788, in Frederick County. It would seem likely that if this occured, this Mary is the mother of George W, and perhaps others.
Can anyone shed some light on this matter or point me toward some valid documentation to clarify it? Are these possibly two seperate families with children of similar names that both moved to Morgan County or did the first wife, Mary, die at the birth of Joseph? The lists of children of George W Newman seem to take two different forms:
> one includes a Lethinda, b 1826, m Solomon Smith and a George Jr married to Amanda Tanner
> others do not include Lethinda and have George Jr married to Nancy and/or the widow Jane Lydia (Allard) Aikins.
(As to this last item, it would be my thought that the widow Aikins probably married the then widower George Sr, this marriage subsequently dissolving, but that is another whole story with no known children involved.)
Other of Jacob's descendants also went on to marry some of my Aikins family from Morgan County, Ohio. These marriages are wherein my interest in the matter lies:

Many of these families, as well as many others, went on from Morgan County, OH to Vernon County, WI, ala message #592 on this forum. I would also be interested in additional information on this migration, specifically the reasons for it -- was it religious, ethnic, free land, disease, etc?
This listing has been compiled from my own research, and the contributions of other family members. Sources are available.
