Christian Wells/Samuel E. 'Capt" DeWeese
I grew up in Wellston, OK which is located in Lincoln Co., OK.This is just some local historical info for anyone interested and I am posting it here because Capt. DeWeese was I am told from Morgan Co.
Christian T. Wells of OH established the Kickapoo Trading Post in 1883 in Indian Territory in or near present day Wellston, OK.A post office was established there in 1884 (2nd in Lincoln Co.) and named Wellston with Wells serving as the 1st postmaster. The last post trader and post master was Capt. Samuel E. DeWeese. This post office was discontinued June 9, 1892 and then reestablished June 15, 1897 following the actual founding of the town of Wellston after the Kickapoo Land opening in 1895.
Capt. DeWeese was according to information I've seen & heard, a one-armed veteran of the 70th Indiana Infantry.Captain Creek was named for him and it is believed that his son Orel b. 1890 was the 1st white child born in the Kickapoo Nation.
In 1922 a Joe DeWeese was a mail carrier for Wellston, OK.I do not know for certain his relationship to Capt. DeWeese.Would like to contact descendants of either DeWeese or Christian Wells.
