The Ladies of the G.A.R. was formed in 1881 and is the oldest women's hereditary society in the U.S. Applicants must provide proof of relationship to a Union veteran and the veteran's service. Cost of joining is a one-time application fee of $10 plus $20 annual dues. It takes 10 women to form a chapter. Chapters are named after something or someone relating to the Union in the Civil War.
