DAYTON METRO LIBRARY CORRESPONDENCE FILE
Posted by: STEVE KOONS (ID *****9528) Date: August 06, 2004 at 09:59:28

Those of you who have used the correspondence files at the Dayton Metro Library as an aid to your genealogical research should be aware that the records are being "censored".... all references to names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses are being removed from the files, thus eliminating any possibility of contacting the author. Apparently this is a response to "privacy" concerns, but many of the items in the file are 40-50 years old and the original authors in some cases have moved or are deceased, so I'm not sure who's privacy is being protected?

Not sure why they're actually paying somebody to do this, they might as well just destroy the files as far as I'm concerned. (Can you tell? I've never been much of a fan of censorship in any form and I consider this about one notch below "book-burning".

They appear to be far enough along in the process that letters or emails to the library directory probably won't do any good. Unless it prevents the destruction of other records that they may have targeted for the same treatment.
